2014 Chevrolet Cruze - Reliable, comfortable, no worries.
It's a nice car, very reliable and comfortable (and affordable). My previous car was a 2001, so many of my feelings may just be directed to this being a newer model. Runs smoothly, its stick shift (6 speed) works well. Very computerized; has XM Radio and OnStar; has a camera for reverse and remote entry. Gas mileage is pretty good. It's not really an "Eco" car despite the styling. Just a bit lighter (it doesn't carry a spare).
Not a bad looking car (I have a silver one). One problem is there are so many other silver Cruzes out there, it's hard to pick out in a parking lot. There's enough interior space to fit four comfortably. Four doors as well. I have had no difficulties with it at all. Nothing but oil changes and some other routine maintenance. I once had a flat tire and was disappo... (more)
Story
Took my parent's dog in it one time and went through the car wash (she loves that). But she peed in the back after.
Pros
It's an affordable automobile. I think I paid under $25K. It's a popular enough vehicle that there's no difficulties with service or parts. Everyone knows how to service a Cruze. Nothing fancy with styling, but attractive enough as it goes. I like the black interior. There's enough interior space to fit four comfortably. Four doors as well. It has a bit of pep to it and controls well. I have the 6-speed automatic and it is forgiving if you're imprecise with your shifting. It runs quietly (unlike my previous vehicle). Vision is good, enhanced by the backup camera. It's modern (well, a few y... (more)
Cons
Not as much power as my previous car (Mercury Cougar). It's not really an "Eco" car despite the styling. Just gets a little better gas mileage. People see the green decal and think it is a hybrid. It doesn't carry a spare tire, which is probably the cost of Eco. There's a patch and pump that I wouldn't trust to use. It's not a super exciting model, more reliable than fun, and kind of a dime a dozen car. There are thousands upon thousands of silver Cruzes out there. My car isn't special. Trunk space isn't great, and once or twice the trunk seemed to open of its own accord. There's no way to... (more)
2014 Chevrolet Cruze - Solid car choice for commuting students
To start with, the car's appearance: I love the external color and finish. The shimmer is classy without being glittery/over the top. The rims are basic, very clean though, and look nice with the car. Headlights are good, but not great in terms of sight, but the high beams perform exceptionally. Not a fan of how low the car sits - I will often scrape along even mildly steep driveways or parking spaces, and even as a young woman, I have trouble climbing out of the car. Performance has been great so far; I get really good MPG (about 30) between about half and half long-stretch highway driving and short city trips. The turbo engine does surge when sitting, and it feels like the car might stall, but so far, I have never had issues starting it, running for long periods of time, in 0 degree ... (more)
Story
I enjoy taking the car to shopping malls or even just around campus and seeing other Cruzes, often exactly the same model/color, that I can park next to.
Pros
My favorite thing about this vehicle, hands down, is the fuel efficiency. I get on average 400 miles to a tank, and I know other Cruze owners who do much better. Can use E10 or E15 gas, but I find better performance using E10. E15 seemed to burn up faster. I also love the trunk space; it's probably got room for two or three people, for a good reference. I store everything in my trunk. The color is beautiful, and I've seen other colorways and love all of them. The design of this car is particularly pleasing to me. The maintenance reliability so far has been good for me at about 85,000 miles... (more)
Cons
The interior is a little tight. Anyone over maybe 5'8" feels a little squeezed in the front and definitely in the back. Especially if the front seats have to move back at all for height/leg reasons. Again, the low height of the car is an issue in terms of driveways and some speed bumps. I'm almost certain I've scraped something off of the bottom by now. Worried about reliability long-term because I know the valve cover, and some other intake manifold parts are prone to needing replacing multiple times over the car's lifetime, and those are $400-500 repairs.
