The 2003 Dodge Durango R/T, with a 5.9L V8 is a torque beast that continues to soldier on after years of heavy use. This vehicle still has its original engine and transmission, and a documented service record going back to initial purchase. At 200,589 miles, the truck seems just as strong and apt as a brand new one. Build quality is what you would expect in this segment from an American manufacturer. Of course there are some loose trim pieces (visors in particular) and some of the electrically powered accessories (sun roof) are starting to show some eccentricities. However, with the optional 8 inch wide wheels and a set of Pirelli P-Zero tires, this truck handles as well as most cars and is a fun ride down twisty back roads. It plants well in the middle of the corner and accele... (more)
Story
Taking six friends into a wild cave in this vehicle was a lot of fun.
Pros
Torque and power (with a few aftermarket parts, which are plentiful for the 360 cubic inch, 5.9L engine in this model), handling, off road ability and winter weather performance.
Cons
Fuel economy, less interior space than in SUV's of a comparable size, difficulty to find replacement parts in 4.7L trim levels

First off, never get the first model year of any new vehicle. They never have the bugs worked out, ever. In this case, 1998 was the first year of the Durango. The small things do matter. Like rust on the rear hatch lock device that caused the electric lock to fail. Had to remove the inner door fascia to get to the lock to remove the rust so that it would function. Cruise control mechanism failed due to clogging, a bitch to get to repair. Stupid crap like that. Overall, I liked the Durango, had a big v-8, lots of power, good four-wheel drive (for most of it's life, anyway) and plenty of room.
Story
I was driving the access road to the Daniel Boone National Forest in November of 2006 when I saw what I swear was an Ivory Billed Woodpecker fly across the road in front of me and my Durango. I didn't have a camera of any sort, so I have no proof. So what, I saw what I saw.
Pros
Plenty of power, decent brakes, all of the creature comforts. Very comfortable seating and good visibility.
Cons
It had all of the first model year bugs. Stuff that only experience can overcome.

Every question I had about the vehicle was answered. I walked around a few hours and test drove a few vehicles before finding the one I wanted to purchase. They are a little persistent but that is understandable. I checked the vehicle out every inch of it was looked over by me and a friend of mine who is a skilled mechanic. It was a very easy deal and I had no complaints.
