Its reliable
I have a 2000 beetle. I bought it when I was 19 and I am 21 now and have had a few problems but not many. I got it used from an old woman who did not really drive it at all so there was only like 3000 miles on it. It's really low to the ground so every bump and crack I can feel.

Fun, but required a lot of maintenance
I had wanted a Volkswagen Beetle since I was a little kid, so I jumped at the chance to purchase one new in 2000. I chose a silver sport model. I loved the way it looked and felt when driving. It definitely had personality, I named it Nigel. At the time, beetles were fairly new, having just returned to the market and I loved the uniqueness of that but over time it seemed like everybody was driving a silver beetle and that sometimes made finding MY beetle in a parking lot difficult! It was a fun little car to drive, but there were a lot of maintenance issues. Even simple maintenance tasks, like changing a headlamp or tail light had to be done at the dealer, because a special and very expensive tool was required to get into the bulb compartments. It seemed to eat oil, I frequently had to add oil in between regularly scheduled oil changes. I drove it for 10 years, and while I loved how fun Nigel was, eventually I gave him up because the monthly maintenance costs were beginning to cost as much as a payment on a new car would cost, and the estimate I was given for the needed electrical fixes was more than the blue book value of the car.
