I bought this truck in 1999 and paid cash. It is a basic, no nonsense model. It is bright red with manual transmission, manual windows, and a rear view mirror that likes to fall off about once a year. This truck has over 140,000 miles on it and still has its shiny coat and no dents. It has had a minimal amount of mechanical difficulties despite having had to put up with three teenage drivers trying to learn stick shift. The truck has had many successful state inspections and rarely needs anything more than brakes. The only body damage was when a bungie cord accidentally snapped against the rear window, causing it to shatter in many pieces of safety glass. The bed of the truck still has its original liner and it looks as good as it did when it was new. The upholstery inside is a... (more)
Story
My daughter and I used the truck to move her out of her college apartment. All of her stuff fit in the bed of the truck but we could not completely secure the mattress. When we went up hills, the mattress looked like it was hanging out the back. As we went back down the hills, the mattress pressed against the back window. We made it home!
Pros
The top positives are: great gas mileage, enough room for three men in the cab, adequate room in the bed, and a fairly comfortable ride.
Cons
The manual transmission can get a bit touchy as the truck has gotten older and the air conditioner has needed several tune-ups through the years.

I have a 1987 Ford Ranger with the diesel engine. These trucks are apparently pretty rare, and it might be a bit harder to find parts for but so far I haven't had any problems. I like having the cargo capacity of a truck and the gas mileage of a car. I bought this truck and then went on a road trip to California from Washington and back. The truck did fine the whole way. It's a stick shift, and it shifts amazingly easily. The bed is also designed with groves that will hold 2x6 planks to support a queen size mattress. I haven't used that feature yet, but it sounds like an awesome idea for car camping. The truck also has a spare tire, which not all vehicles have these days. I won't buy a vehicle without one.
Story
I live about a mile away from the nearest paved road, and the gravel roads can get bad some times. So far the truck hasn't had any problems making it through the pot holes. It can also get pretty far out in the woods for camping, which it's great for.
Pros
It takes diesel, which is currently cheaper than gas. The miles per gallon is about 28, which is better than most cars I've owned. The body is solid and steel, I don't like plastic on my vehicles. It has a seven-foot bed with a canopy, so it's great for hauling things. The truck bed is fairly low so it's easy to get things in and out. The under carriage is solid and not rusting out.
Cons
The interior is a bit beat up, and the seat is made of pleather which is doing the old seat split. This could be easily fixed with a seat cover. Not much power going up hills, but it gets there eventually. The exhaust is a bit smelly but you get used to it. The inside of the cab is pretty dark at night. I would like more light around the shifter.
