The 1992 Ford Ranger is still a great truck for 2017. My Ranger has over 150, 000 miles on it, and I've had major engine repairs done on it only once. While its handling and performance is in line with what you would expect from a '90s vehicle and considering how old it is, it has held up incredibly well. Even the interior of the '92 Ranger is holding up well, with only a few threadbare patches in the driver's seat. The paint by this point is faded and chipped, but again, considering the truck's age, is incredibly well preserved. I had one issue with the wiring in the dashboard, but that was quickly and easily repaired by a professional. Changing the oil is easy for even someone completely unfamiliar with the process. This is a great starter truck for a teenager. My particular m... (more)
Story
I hauled an apartment full of stuff up a mountainside, much more than the truck should have been able to handle.
Pros
Reasonable gas mileage. Suspension incredibly durable. Fun to drive. 4X4 equipment durable. 4X4 works very well. Aftermarket parts tend to be cheap. Good-sized gas tank. Has good mileage, even with heavy loads. Extremely reliable engineer. Brake pads and drums don't wear out quickly. Great leg room for driver and passenger. Cup holders perfectly sized. Radio reception excellent. Starts up easily in cold weather. Taking care of it is easy.
Cons
Radio doesn't last as long as other components. 4X4 gets no traction on slick snow. Seems to wear out cheap tires more quickly than other trucks. Noisy engine because of age. Didn't come with an A/C. The sealant of the windshield goes bad every few years. Difficult to install aftermarket components. Small glove compartment. Manual hard to understand in parts. Tires hard to change on roadside. Not easy to take apart heater. Gas tank on annoying side. Won't start unless it's in park. E-brake goes out every few years. Heater is noisy.

This Ford Ranger Pickup XLT was an emergency buy. My previous vehicle was not running and was more to repair than acquiring this vehicle from a co-worker under the conditions that I was offered. I was indifferent to this vehicle at first. It is, however, the first pickup I have ever owned. I grew to see the versatility of a pickup from this vehicle. It has also turned out to be the most reliable, versatile, and easy to own and maintain of the vehicles I have owned. I also learned the value of a five speed manual transmission from this vehicle.
Story
I learned to mix concrete with this vehicle. In my rural area there are a lot of unpaved back roads. These turned out to be ideal for "harvesting" sand to mix with cement when you're learning how to work with concrete.
Pros
This is a basic working man's pickup truck. It is not a luxury vehicle. It is meant to provide moderate comfort and amenities for a person using it for getting things done. However, it delivers those traits exceptionally. It is rugged and well built, not delicate or fragile. It provides shelter when working in inclement weather and can be accessorized when needed to carry moderately weather vulnerable cargo. It has the bigger of the small Ford six cylinder engines and it is light enough so that it cannot be called "underpowered". If you know how to take care of it (like I do not) or can af... (more)
Cons
There is not a lot of creature comforts in this working man's pickup truck. It is not a center of luxury or entertainment. Yet it can be accessorized easily to make it so. If I were seeking a similar pickup truck I would choose this same model but a model in the same like with a 4-door crew cab. This would give me the best of both worlds as far a passenger economy and rugged durability for getting things done outside with.
