Other powertrain options include the S 580, which pairs a mild hybrid system with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, and a lineup of ultra-luxurious Maybach variants, which offer twin-turbo variants V12 engines with 612-horsepower. All models of the S-Class come standard with all-wheel drive and a 9-speed automatic transmission.

2022 BMW 7 Series

The BMW 7 Series has positioned itself as the sporty choice among large luxury cars in its class. Refreshed for the 2020 model year, the 7 Series features an enlarged dual-kidney grille, which gives it a more dominating appearance on the road today. This vehicle is the German automaker's most expensive and largest sedan offering a world-class infotainment system, up-to-date tech features, and sporty handling.

The 2022 BMW 7 Series carries a starting price of $87,000; however, moving up the trim levels can take you to $160,000 for an M760i. While some automakers have limited their model offerings for this class, BMW did the exact opposite and offered a 7 Series sports sedan for just about everyone since drivers can have it in numerous configurations.

The base model 740i features a rear-wheel-drive 335-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine. The 740i xDrive shares the same engine, but it comes standard with all-wheel drive. The 745e xDrive plug-in hybrid model also features the same engine but produces 389-horsepower when combined with the electric motor. Other powertrain options include twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engines and a turbocharged 6.6-liter V12 engine. All variants have 8-speed automatic transmission.

2022 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe

BMW created a winner with the four-door coupe-like 8 Series. It looks sportier than your typical luxury sedan with carefully crafted exterior styling cues and provides real passenger and cargo space that sets it apart from its rivals. The Gran Coupe adds on two extra doors to create a practical sedan body style while preserving the two-door's playful nature and sleek roofline. It is arguably one of the most attractive luxury sedans in its class.

Starting at $85,995, the 2022 BMW 8 Series is surprisingly fun to drive with its nimble handling and smooth powertrains. Powertrain options include a 335-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine and a 523-horsepower twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine.

Despite its large size, the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe earns a competitive fuel economy with EPA estimates of 22 mpg city and 29 mpg highway with a rear-wheel-drive configuration.

2022 Lexus LS

Previously, the Lexus LS was an unexpected entry as a luxury full-size sedan. Still, more than 30 years later, it is now a strong competitor as one of the best luxury sedans, which delivers the quality America expects from Toyota's luxury class.

With a starting price of $77,000, you can drive the base LS500 with its 416-horsepower 3.5L twin-turbo V6 engine. The other powertrain option is the naturally aspirated 3.-liter V6 hybrid system with an output of 354-horsepower.

Every Lexus is cheaper than its German rivals and holds its value better, which helps it stands out in its class. Apart from how quiet and luxurious the cabin is, adding unique Japanese artisanal styling features, including the Kiriko hand-cut glass and Haku metal trim, helps the 2022 Lexus LS stand out.

2022 Genesis G90

Hyundai received a great deal of skepticism when it introduced its Genesis luxury lineup of vehicles in 2015. After receiving a refresh for the 2020 model year, the Genesis G90 is bolder than ever before and a strong contender among 2022 luxury cars.

With a starting price of $74,995, the 2022 Genesis G90 offers a generous list of standard tech and safety features and a plushness most rivals charge extra for. The base model features a 365-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter engine, although the most luxurious version of the G90 has a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 engine generating 420-horsepower. Rear-wheel drive is standard across both powertrains with 8-speed automatic transmission, although AWD is an option.

Impressively, a Lexicon 17-speaker surround-sound system is a standard feature in the G90, an in-car system popularized and used by Rolls-Royce.

2022 Porsche Panamera

Porsche is renowned for its production of fine sports cars, and its 2022 Panamera is definitely a show-stopper luxury sports sedan with all the bells and whistles you could ask for. It offers high thrills, luxury, quality, and loads of high-tech features.

The 2022 Porsche Panamera may have a high starting price for its class at $88,400, but to be fair, no other luxury sedan offers the same handling and engineering talents as Porsche. The range also offers several variants with seven powertrains (three of which are hybrid) to choose from. There is also the option of three body styles, including regular, Sport Turismo, and the long-wheelbase Executive, which offers class-competitive rear legroom.

The range of twin-turbo engines starts with a 325-horsepower 2.9-liter V6 engine, while the GTS offers a 4.0-liter V8. The E-Hybrid variants use the same V6 and V8 engines and an electric motor to power the plug-in hybrid powertrains. The Turbo S E-Hybrid offers 690-horsepower, which is one of the most powerful luxury sedans for 2022, and yet it achieves 48 MPG e, an impressive figure for fuel economy.

2022 Audi A8

Audi entered its latest generation A8 for the 2022 model year, which goes hand-in-hand with the German automaker's tech-focused identity. It exudes sophistication both with its exterior styling and luxurious cabin. Starting at $90,000, you will enjoy a comfortable ride with its adaptive air suspension, while passengers in the rear seats welcome limo-like space and available power-reclining and massage seats.

Audi retains its sporty driving experience with its turbocharged engines and all-wheel-drive system. The base model features a 335-horsepower turbocharged V6 engine, but a plug-in hybrid model pairs an electric motor with a V6 engine for a combined output of 443-horsepower. There is also a more powerful 453-horsepower twin-turbo V8 engine.

The near-silent cabin is laden with high-quality materials that compete well against the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7 Series. It rises above rivals with its generous list of standard and driver-assistance features. The 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit instrument cluster is standard across all models, and so are the 10.1-inch upper and 8.6-inch lower haptic center screens matched with the MMI Touch Response System.

While the Quattroporte may introduce a full redesign for 2023, you can still enjoy all the offerings of the 2022 model year, which carries a starting price of $97,995. Its rarity increases its desirability as one of the best full-size luxury sedans. While some rivals offer more convenience and comfort features, the 2022 Quattroporte brings the heat with two powerful turbocharged engines. The base model GT features a 345-horsepower 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, while the Modena boosts that power to 424-horsepower with its 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine.

If comfort is your be-all and end-all for your next new car, then the 2022 Volvo S90 offers class-leading comfortable seats and a luxurious cabin. When competing against models, such as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the 2022 Volvo S90 stands out with its more refined and smooth ride. The latest version of Volvo's turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter inline-4 engines power its impressive ride quality. The result is 295-horsepower when combined with the 48-volt starter-generator. While the horsepower decreases from the previous years, the all-wheel-drive powertrain is smoother, and the fuel economy increases.

2022 Tesla Model S

The 2022 Tesla Model S earns its place on our rankings of the best full-size luxury sedans thanks to its class-leading maximum driving range and supercar acceleration, which leaves several rivals in its class behind. New electric cars, like the Audi e-Tron GT and Porsche Taycan, may challenge Tesla in terms of performance. Still, the Tesla Model S truly stands out with its available semi-autonomous driving technology and jet-like luxurious interior.

The Tesla Model S is one of the most desirable and compelling options in its class, which may be one of the reasons behind the $96,440 starting price tag, but it's worth every dollar. No matter which variant you choose, an electric motor is dedicated to each of the front and rear axles, offering full-time all-wheel drive. The Model S offers ferocious acceleration and moves from zero to 60 mph in 2.4 seconds. The 1020-horsepower Plaid is quicker at 2.1 seconds and has proven to be one of the most agile sports sedans in its class.

The Tesla Model S further impresses with the base Long Range model receiving the highest MPG e ratings at 121 city and 112 highway and a 390 mile EPA estimated driving range.
