2012 Hyundai Sonata - It sucks
I bought a 2012 Sonata to replace another. It had regular 3,000-mile oil changes. I bought it to NTB for the last one in June of 2014.The sticker said to get oil changed at 58,000. He said it would be fine at 62,000. No problems. I heard some knocking at 63,000 miles so I had it towed in. I have a warranty so I did not want to risk it. No oil light. No burning. No indication of oil issue. I thought it was a belt. I take it they told me it had burned through almost four quarts of oil and it killed the engine. Mild weather, light driving. Reasonable oil changes a little past oil change date and this? The extended $1,000 warranty won't cover it. They want $5,000 to put new engine. Beware.
Story
Our 2012 Sonata with regular maintenance records experienced a sudden catastrophic engine failure at 74,000 miles. No warning lights have ever come on in the car, but it suddenly began to lose power and make a terrible noise. Since it was still under warranty, we had it towed to our dealer who told us that the engine had to be replaced. It was covered and the engine would be replaced within a ... (more)
Pros
I am very careful when I buy a car because I tend to keep them for long time. I built a matrix to help me decide what car to buy. The objective parameters (I add one subjective at the end) where: first class gas mileage, excellent crash ratings, better than average warranty, first class in space, better than average five years cost to own, excellent price. Two cars came on top Hyundai Sonata/Kia optima. Both leaded the pack in gas mileage, tops in crash ratings, but the Sonata was bigger than the rest in almost any measure, great price, tons of added standard features (Bluetooth was impor... (more)
2012 Hyundai Sonata - Trash
Do not buy this car !!! A couple of months after I bought this car, the check engine light comes up when I was driving home from work. I take it to Hyundai and they replace the high-pressure fuel pump. At the same time, I noticed there were other recalls for my car and had them check the engine for trouble. Hyundai gave it a clean bill of health. Fast forward three months, I`m driving down Ontario 4012, suddenly there is a loud metallic knocking sound from the front and the car dies. I have it towed to a mechanic close by, and he tells me the engine is out, and I will have to replace the engine. I take it to Hyundai, and they tell me the car is out of warranty ( 140k Kms) and they wouldn`t do anything about it (Cooksville Hyundai Mississauga). Long story short , I spent $5,000 to get t...
