Mazda takes a great amount of pride in the notion that their cars are designed with the driver's experience at the front of their minds. I upgraded to a 2012 Mazda3 from a 2008 Honda Fit, which was also a good car, but not in the same category as the Mazda3. When I started looking for a replacement for my Honda, there were a few requirements: the car had to seat 4 people comfortably, be able to carry some cargo (have a hatchback), get reasonably good gas mileage, and be fun to drive. The Honda did those things, but barely. I chose the Mazda3 because 2012 marked the first year of their Skyacitv technology, which was focused on making a gasoline engine more efficient, rather than employing a more expensive hybrid-electric drivetrain to improve fuel economy. That entailed lightened engi... (more)
Story
I live in Oregon and there are plenty of great driving roads up here. One time in particular that I remember having an absolute blast in my car was this past summer. I had been staying with some family on the Oregon coast and was going to be meeting some friends to go camping at Mt. Hood, which meant I would leave the coast bound for the mountain, making it a several hour drive. The car was lo... (more)
Pros
My favorite feature about the Mazda3 is that it was built around the driver. The ergonomics are quite good – the shift knob is placed perfectly, the pedals are (in my opinion and for my foot size) almost the perfect distance apart, and the weight distribution makes for a really nimble feeling on the road. What's more, is that I can enjoy the light-footed and tossable nature of the car without sacrificing too much practicality. I can still load up the car with my wife, the dogs and enough stuff for a weekend trip – something that a sports car or coupe would have a much tougher time doing. ... (more)
Cons
It's tough for me to come up with things I don't like about the Mazda3. The first thing that comes to mind are the front seats. While they're comfortable for shorter trips, after a few hours they start to get a little uncomfortable. I'm a tall guy and I wish the seat was just a little deeper so that the front edge of came closer to my knees. The bolstering could also be a little deeper to help keep me more snug in turns, but again, that's a sports car feature that perhaps the majority of people might not want. While I mentioned that I really enjoyed the Bluetooth feature of the car's stere... (more)

I purchased my 2006 Mazda 3 used with 123k miles on it. It is the base trim package with the 2.0 liter engine and a five-speed manual transmission, which has started to give me problems after putting 32k miles on the car myself. The third and fifth gear synchronizers have started to go out causing gear mesh problems and grinding when shifting. I have forgotten many times to change my oil on schedule with the longest mileage between changes being over 9k miles. The car has yet to give me any issues regarding oil changes. The interior is decent, nothing to write home about, slightly sporty. The build quality is not the best but decent. Overall, I am happy with my purchase aside from buying the sedan versus hatchback which would make my car camping easier.
Story
I drove this car through 50 miles of 4WD vehicle roads in Death Valley. The grandstands were awesome at night with no light pollution. This car takes me on all my photography trips.
Pros
The car is cheap, which makes it an easy purchase. My Mazda 3 drives nicely. I imagine the rest do as well if taken care of and maintained. The car gets really good fuel economy with my highest being 48 miles per gallon while drafting a semi at 70, especially on highway drives when you aren't pushing it hard.
Cons
The trim could be nicer, but it is good for a car of its age and the trim levels of similar cars back in 2005-6. City fuel economy is low for me, but still around what they quote.

This dealership offered fantastic service and helped me select the perfect car without pushing me into a "deal". I absolutely hate pressure and they were more than willing to work with me. The dealership also offers mechanic services, which are great!
