When I purchased the 2001 Mercury Cougar it was in great used condition with about 45,000 miles on it. Over the years of driving the car I haven't experienced many difficulties; the interior has held up well, the framework of the car has never posed any issues. The car handled very well (I drove windy country roads everyday with great ease). The only issues I have had with the car is that the sunroof frame broke about 2 years after purchasing the vehicle after very little use, the alternator and battery posed issues as well having to be replaced multiple times and the ABS brakes became constantly active due to a circuit connection issue.
Story
When I first purchase the vehicle I lived out in the country and the car was a great cruising car on nice days. Some of the best memories were made cruising country roads with the windows and sunroof open (when the sunroof was working properly).
Pros
Some of my favorite aspects of the Mercury cougar were: 'Sporty' look for a great value, great gas mileage for an older model, interior design is very comfortable, handles windy roads at high speeds very well, roomy for a small sized car, large trunk.
Cons
My least favorite aspects of the car were: framing for the sunroof was plastic and broke after very little use (parts were discontinued and had to be purchase for >$1,000 from Europe if I wanted to replace it). Alternator and battery were replaced many times with little time in between. After a year of driving there was an electrical circuit issue that caused the ABS brakes to constantly be active.

This car was honestly the worst car I have ever owned in my life. It looked very pretty and sporty, but it did not drive well at all. It needed constant repairs, and all of the materials were very expensive. The car itself was poorly put together, and I would never recommend that anyone buy a Cougar, or even a Mercury product.
Story
It overheated on the highway with my boyfriend and I in it once, and we had a great laugh about it later on.
Pros
This was a bright yellow color and very attractive looking, which is what attracted me to it in the first place. The interior was made up of black leather with some very unique trim and fancy interior features. However, the positive features on the car stopped there. The interior was easy to care for, and since it was all black, it did not show dirt as easily as a car with a lighter interior.
Cons
Hardly anything ever went right with this car. The transmission went out at about 140 thousand miles. There was an oil leak, which caused the car to overheat. Not many mechanics would work on the car because all of the interior elements were hard to get to and complicated to repair. It never ran correctly or without issue, even for one day when I had it. The heat and air conditioning went out almost immediately as well.
