What’s the most annoying habit of drivers on the road today? Here’s a clue: it’s probably in your hand right now.

According to a study by Autolist.com, nearly half of all car shoppers said that the most annoying habit of fellow drivers was people using their phones while driving. Rounding out the top five worst habits were not using turn signals, tailgating, driving too slowly in the left lane and aggressive driving. 

The survey looked at responses from nearly 3,000 current car buyers between August and September. Drivers were asked to pick three bad habits of other drivers from a list of 13 total choices.

Despite this long list of potential bad habits to choose from, respondents of the study made it clear that phone use while driving was their biggest pet peeve. Forty-nine percent of those surveyed cited it as the most annoying habit of all drivers on the road. 

Not using turn signals or blinkers ranked number two, with 42 percent of respondents including it on their list. Tailgating other drivers and driving too slowly in the left lane were nearly tied, with 31 percent and 30 percent of respondents listing it respectively. 

Fast or aggressive driving was the fifth most cited response, with 24 percent of those polled choosing it. 

Bans on texting while driving exist in nearly every state; only Arizona, Missouri and Montana do not have full texting bans for all drivers, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Only 16 states have laws preventing the use of handheld phones entirely while driving. Another seven states have partial bans for younger licensed drivers and for situations like school or construction zones.

Perhaps knowing that their fellow drivers hated the practice, respondents in Autolist’s survey were much more reluctant to admit to their own cell phone usage while driving. 

When asked which bad habits they themselves were most guilty of, the most common response was driving fast or aggressively, with 15 percent of respondents citing it. 

Using their cellphone was number two with 14 percent, followed by driving too slowly in the left lane (10 percent), not using their turn signals (nine percent) and cutting in the front of a long line of vehicles (eight percent).
