The Nissan Altima is a car that I think anyone looking for a great family car that is not an SUV should buy. When I went car shopping I test drove a Honda Accord, a Toyota Camry, a Ford Fusion, and the Altima. The Altima was by far the best of them all, and that is not an easy thing to say, because all the other cars I drove were all excellent vehicles.
Story
This is the car I brought both my kids home from the hospital in. It will always have a special place in my heart because of that.
Pros
The pros about the Nissan Altima are plentiful. For starters, it has a lot of room in both the front and the back. I have two car seats in the back seat, and if needed, I could easily fit a third. Next, it gets amazing gas mileage. On the highways I am averaging nearly 40 MPG. The car also has a large trunk and great acceleration, as it has no problem picking up speed. In the time I have had this car, I have also had absolutely no mechanical issues with the vehicle. It has only needed basics like tires, brakes and regular oil changes. My mechanic says everything is still in great shape and... (more)
Cons
I do not really have any thing negative to say about the Nissan Altima. This is by far the best car I have ever owned and would buy another on without question.

I bought the car used from a private seller in another state. Despite being 12 years old, it ran beautifully, had lots of power and everything electronic still worked. Over the next few months the problems that the seller tried to hide became apparent. I took it to a Nissan dealership to have it checked out and it has a problem with the exhaust (caused the check engine light to come on) and a CV joint that needs to be replaced. The worst thing however was that places underneath the car are completely rusted through. This actually caused a gas leak because part of the filler neck had been eaten away. Its frustrating, but not uncommon here in new England to see rust like that. The winters here are just brutal on cars. Yet despite the shadiness of the dealer and all the little problems th... (more)
Pros
Like I said before, the fact that the engine is mechanically sound and still in perfect condition was the most important thing to me. It was great that the heat and air conditioning worked as well too. When you buy older used cars, that is usually not the case. I like that it isn't a big heavy car. Its light, surprisingly fast and it handles really well. I'm partial to the cloth interior, leather rips and gets dirty really easily. Plus the cloth warms up a lot faster in the winter, a small detail but one that I'm thankful for on those bitter cold nights. The car doesn't really have too man... (more)
Cons
The negative things I have to say about this car I think are only due to the lack of maintenance from the previous owner, and not because of the car itself. Obviously the hole in the fuel filler neck and the gas leak would be my number one complaint, and all the rust underneath the car certainly doesn't help any. Another problem that I've had, I don't know if its being caused by the brakes or tires or if its an alignment issue, but I noticed that if you brake really hard, the car violently lurches to the right. I found this out by accident a few months after I had purchased it. Still, I do... (more)
