We sold our old car because, even though it was new, we wanted a car that would be more reliable. I posted on Facebook and all my friends suggested I get an Outback. We have three children and we figured out that by purchasing slim line car seats we can fit all three kids in the back. I prefer that to a minivan because I can reach them all to hand them things at a red light and it doesn't use as much gas.
Story
We have driven the car to Florida from Tennessee many times and I love it every time.
Pros
There were several things that appealed to me besides the reliable reputation. First of all, I could put my kids in the middle and the dogs in the back so our whole family could travel together. Secondly, I really like the size of the car, I found that it was off the ground enough for me to feel safe with bigger cars, but was not too huge. We get a pretty decent gas mileage as well. I also think it is kind of funny that a lot of our friends seem to have the same car.
Cons
I can't really think of anything negative except for the price, but I think that is to be expected from a high quality car. I would prefer a price around $15k for a new Subaru. That said, we will probably keep it for a decade so it averages out in the long run.

My Subaru has been my first car since I turned 18 and my mother gave me her older vehicle that she had used to drive her mail route every year since I was only little. This car is the definition of reliable. It's only a year younger than I am and still going strong, and that's with only a small amount of maintenance. The 4WD helped her deliver mail in the winter and it helps me today to get to work through the snow when everyone else is stuck on the side of the road. It has tons of space for camping, moving, and just general living. The fuel economy is decent and I haven't had any major problems along those lines. One problem I have had is when it comes to replacing parts, they're generally hard to find and therefore can be a tad more expensive than your more common car parts. Still, I... (more)

I have a 2002 Outback Sedan in Forest Green. I bought it brand new in the fall of 2001. My experience at the dealership was fabulous. Because I wanted many upgrades and a very specific color, the dealership found the exact vehicle from a dealership from another state. Because it was going to take a week or so for my car to arrive, the dealership allowed me to drive the one that I test drove until mine arrived. I was also quite pleased that the dealer did not treat me like I didn't know what I was doing or that I was a helpless girl. This was the first Subaru I had ever owned or for that matter even driven. But now 12 years later, I can't imagine owning anything other than a Subaru. It truly happened, I fell in love with this car. In the non-mountainous region where I lived, very fe... (more)
Pros
- Incredible 6-cylinder horizontally opposed engine (the same kind that Porsche uses in their cars) with sports car like acceleration. - The higher ground clearance makes actual off road driving a reality. - The auto dimming rear view mirror keeps pesky headlights behind you from glaring in your eyes (plus it has a digital compass). - Virtually trouble free for the 12 years I've owned it. I change the oil every 3500 miles, had to install a new battery or two, replaced headlight bulbs, tires and brake pads, but no high dollar or repeated repairs. - It has a timing chain instead of a timing ... Cons
- Gas mileage is not the best, but I did get the 6 cylinder engine instead of the 4. And the AWD adds a good bit of weight which keeps me at approximately 22 MPG combined. - Over the years I've noticed a bit more road noise. - The back seats do not fold down which makes fitting larger items somewhat awkward.
