The Subaru Outback is one of the best family vehicles on the market. It has ample room in the trunk to hold groceries and strollers. The rear seat allows you to put in two car seats or keep your preschoolers far enough apart that they don't fight. It is narrow enough to comfortably fit in a garage while roomy enough to be comfortable. Heated seats are standard. It handles muddy and icy streets well. It comes with a powerful engine that goes 0 to 60 well before you reach the end of the highway ramp. This is one of the most reliable vehicles I've owned in 20 years. They rarely need repairs until it hits the 100K mile mark. This is the second Subaru Outback I've owned, which tells you how much I liked the vehicle.
Story
When ice storms shut down schools and work for several days in Texas, my Subaru was able to go down the driveway and then up the street without slipping and sliding while other people were stranded. Pros
It is affordable, less than 30K new. The Subaru Outback handles ice and snow well. The vehicle gets good mileage, never doing worse than 20 miles per gallon even fully loaded in stop and go traffic.
Cons
You have to pay extra for leather seats and the ability to brighten the dashboard lights when the headlights are on. You must pay extra or after-market rates for a rearview mirror with a compass built in. Replacement parts cost more because these aren't as common as Nissan Altima's and Ford trucks. Finding a mechanic with experience repairing Subaru's is something of a challenge.
