My 2004 Toyota Highlander is a great vehicle. I've only had it about 5 months, but have already put 7,000+ miles on it. My dad and I drove it 4,000 miles across the country without a problem, and it fit all of my things with the addition of a roof rack on top. My boyfriend and I drove it to Maine a couple months ago and took it down a really rough road (like REALLY rough). It made it through like a tough cookie and got us out of a couple really sticky situations.
Story
My boyfriend and I drove it 7 hours up to a remote cabin in Maine. We had plenty of room for all of our belongings. The car handled great when we took it down a rough dirt road. The day we left it was pouring down rain, and we knew we wouldn't make it out if we waited until the next day. Luckily my car was able to handle the mud and huge puddles just fine and we made it out okay.
Pros
I think my favorite thing about the car is the space. It holds up to 7 passengers, or the two rows of seats can fold down and hold plenty of things like camping gear, etc. It is great for off-roading, which I've done a few times with the vehicle without a problem. The car is 4-wheel drive which means it will (hopefully!) be able to handle the snow very well (it'll be the first time the vehicle will be driven in the snow).
Cons
There aren't many negative things, but one is the radio. It picks up stations that aren't really radio stations which can be frustrating. One pro and con is the number of places to store things in the vehicle. I've lost things more than once because there's too much room for storage.

For me it was between the Toyota Highlander and Mazda CX-9, the Honda Pilot wasn't impressive. I found the back seats to be pretty similar between the CX-9 and Highlander, but the CX-9 lacks the second row captains chair seating if you need that. However, this essentially makes it a six seater because the seat in the back no three people would be able to sit back there.
Story
With over 80,000 miles on my Highlander, my sons wanted to take (what we refer to as the new car) my Prius across country to save money on gas. Starting in South Bend, IN, we took it to the Grand Canyon via Northern Minnesota. My other son took it to Texas without a problem. In five years and putting on 309,000 miles, I had to change the headlights and get the brakes done only once. The best m... (more)
Pros
Pros of Highlander are possibly better reliability, seat configuration options, AC vents in third row and quieter AC, and made in USA.
