Yes, it is synonymous with the hybrid vehicle technology that is now more mainstream than it was a decade ago. Many people suspect that the Prius is a under-powered, hippy-dippy, frugal-mobile car for environmentalists. I can tell you that is a completely wrong assessment. Although you will not win any 0-60 competitions or break the land speed record, you will enjoy a lot of pick-up and responsive handling at any speed. I've driven this on gravel roads and glare ice conditions and it recovers from slips and spins as good as or better than my old muscle car. It surprised me! And, of course, there is the gas mileage thing. If I recall, the 2010's were supposed to get 45-48 mpg on open road. My Prius easily does that and still does years later. I had a long commute to work through up-and-... (more)
Story
I was speeding down a rough, gravel road trying to make to an appointment on time. I felt the car start slipping and losing traction and sliding. I just cut the speed, hit the engine breaking gear and steered with it through the slide. I couldn't believe how I stayed on the road and regained control so fast!
Pros
- Gas mileage, of course. - Handling - it has a low center of gravity and really handles well. - Back-up camera. - a good amount of space in the Back to hold groceries, luggage, etc. - Seems to require little maintenance.
Cons
- OK, it doesn't really look that cool. - I'm sorta tall, and I'm not a big fan of the seats. They just won't adjust quite right for me. My wife, who is shorter, thinks the seats are perfect. - The ride is not the smoothest. I think all smaller cars have this issue.

I now have about 110,000 miles on this car and have never had any problems with it. My overall gas mileage averages 43 mpg. This mpg includes a lot of in town hills. On the highway I average 55 mpg. This gas mileage is important to me as it means I am having less impact on the environment as well as saving money on gasoline. The vehicle is very easy to handle in all weather conditions, including the snow we get here in Minnesota. It holds the road very well and has plenty of acceleration when needed. The ride is quite comfortable considering the small size of the vehicle. I currently use snow tires year round which makes for a little more road noise in the summer but it is not that objectionable.
Story
I once was sitting in the car with a client in the winter discussing business. I had the car idling and, being a hybrid, it had shut off. When it restarted to charge up the battery my client was amazed. He thought that was really neat and said he was going to look into obtaining a hybrid himself.
Pros
Good gas mileage. Good road handling. Quick acceleration when needed. It has a downshift feature which lets me reduce speed when coming to an intersection without using my brakes. I really like the sleek design and red color. I like the ability to start the car as well as stop it and lock it without taking my keys out of my pocket. There is plenty of room to carry bulky items, especially when the rear seat is folded down. I have managed to transport 10 ft long poles inside the car with no problem. In past life I was a realtor and easily transported signs, sign posts and tools in the car.
Cons
There is a lot of plastic in the build, such as front and rear bumpers. The plastic shatters easily. I hit a snow bank once and ended up spending over $3,000 to get the front end fixed.

I've bought two used cars from Rochester Toyota, and have gotten a good price on a good (or great) car each time. After looking for used Preuses throughout the state and spending a couple of days looking at cheaper deals in the twin cities, my wife and I ended up going with the slightly more expensive option at the dealer we knew and trusted. We got a bit shaved off the cost at the end to boot!
