I really liked this vehicle. The diesel engine has performed very nicely, and is very fuel efficient. I have over 250,000 miles on it, and it continues to run. There is definitely a high cost of repair/ownership for this make/drivetrain, but I think it is worth it. The extra torque from the diesel engine makes it a lot of fun to drive, and the utility of the Sportwagen model really can't be beat. Mine has been across the country several times, and it feels really solid while you are driving it. You do have to get used to the somewhat rougher ride of the vehicle, since the parts are a little bit more heavy to deal with the added torque.
Story
It is fun to surprise people with the excellent acceleration. The car, despite looking like a station wagon, can keep up with many cars whose drivers would believe the opposite. So, you can beat a BMW off the line, or surprise them when they try to tailgate you. The additional benefit is that a big cloud of diesel smoke blocks your escape.
Pros
I really like the great visibility out the back and sides, and the way the seats fold down make it possible to sleep in the back if you are 6 ft or under. The best part of driving it is probably the excellent range on a tank of gas, which, for highway driving comes in a little over 600 miles. There's a really nice sound system (Monsoon) with good speakers, and you get crisp, loud, bass sound whenever you want it. These are just some of my favorite features, but there's so much more. I like the seats, they are very comfortable, and the way you sit in the driver seat is comfortable and advan... (more)
Cons
There's not much, to be honest. Sometimes people worry that you shouldn't be putting diesel into the vehicle, but that's not really a real negative. I guess the repairs/upkeep are a little more expensive, which I don't really like. You usually pay a premium for upkeep/repairs, though the part seem to wear out more slowly than standard gasoline engine vehicles. For example, you can't get an oil change for under about $90, because you need a special all synthetic engine oil. Brakes and Shocks and all that just cost more.

I purchased the "new" Jetta 2.5L edition when it came out in 2005. This model represented a departure from previous versions of the Jetta, which had a more old fashioned look as well as a reputation for poor reliability. The new Jetta very much broke with those traditions. This Jetta comes with a larger, more powerful engine block and (for the time) a rather contemporary look in the interior and on the instrument panel.
Story
Early in my time with the car, on a Saturday morning, a picked up two cute women who needed a ride to a mud run. Being a good citizen with no other plans that morning, I gave them a ride. They both remarked that it was a fun car and that it is rare to see stick shifts in "normal" cars anymore. I ended up sticking around, took photos for them on their camera, and gave them a ride back to campus... (more)
Pros
Many positives to list here... First of all, at about 200 HP, this is a powerful, fun little sedan. You can really tell you are driving a German car. Competing models from Toyota and Honda will make you feel like you've reached middle age prematurely. Also, the cargo space is surprisingly huge, especially for a car with such a small footprint. While I can still fit the Jetta into "compact" parking spaces, I have also managed to fit a queen sized bed into the trunk / back seat area when moving between apartments.
Cons
Although there have been no major maintenance issues, like people have warned me about, there have been several minor nuisance maintenance problems. Most of these related to failures in computer chips or in wiring harnesses in the doors. Fuel economy is a bit of a disappointment as well. Under normal driving conditions, I have never managed to average better than 25 mpg, and I would expect even cars of that size and vintage should be able to pull in the high 20s.

Best prices and good staff. The person who I bought my car from was super helpful and said I could contact them at anytime if I had any questions about how the functions of the car worked.
