Volvo S40 Owner Ratings & Reviews

2001 Volvo S40 - Quality and sturdily built. Good value.
I am very happy with my S40 1.9T. It has over 150,000 miles and has been going very strong since I've owned it. Every single feature still works perfectly -- with the exception of the headlight wipers, which aren't overly necessary anyway, although certainly useful if you live in a very snowy area. The S40 gets great MPG (around 20 in the city and nearly 30 on the highway), and thanks to the turbo, the little 1.9 liter engine pulls quite hard if you need it to. The gas pedal is slightly stiff, but the acceleration is incredibly smooth. The interior of the car is roomy for a smaller sedan, and it has held up nicely as well with the leather having only minor wear. It has most luxury features you could reasonably expect in a commuter sedan (traction control, dual compartment A/C, power wi... (more)
Story
I often hear that the color and model are especially rare in this area, so it's fun having a relatively unique car.
Pros
Good MPG, solid build, decent handling and acceleration, reliable, and comfortable.
Cons
A bit on the expensive side for regular maintenance such as an oil change or brake job, and it's slightly smaller than some might prefer.
2004 Volvo S40 - Excellent
When we were looking for a car, we wanted something that looked good, handled well ( including driving in the snow), was safe, reliable, and didn't have a history of problems - both mechanical and safety issues. Also, we were looking for a car that would last and serve us well, if we followed good maintenance practices.
Story
We have two very steep hills to climb to get to I-5 and really appreciate the responsiveness of the turbo. When the car was in the shop, the last time the loaner was the top sedan, and it was dramatically sluggish which made me appreciate the S40.
Pros
We liked the overall curb appeal. The color silver was very appealing. The price was quite good. The history of the car was good. We appreciated the responsiveness. Its compact size allowed total parking garage and space access. It was a one-owner car. The mileage was low.
Cons
Age would be the single most negative factor. The right front headlight required constant replacement a common issue. Repairs are expensive. The drivers seat is failing.

2004 Volvo S40 -
I was close to the owner and this was a specialty dealership where the cars were always in the best condition. This was the third car I'd purchased from this dealer.
2001 Volvo S60 - Bruce Cox Imports Bellingham
They provide maintenance and repairs when I need it and the service is high quality and quick.
