2001 Chevrolet Malibu - Difficult to drive but great on gas
I love the fact that my Chevy Malibu gets great gas mileage. The interior has held up well over time with no major electronic malfunctions. The trunk is roomy and is deceptively large. I perform many demonstrations for my job, and the trunk easily fits a large table and many items I need for my job. Unfortunately, the car is difficult to drive. It is very tough to maintain the speed limit, as it always feels as if the car is driving much faster than it is. I often find myself having to keep up with traffic, because I am going too slow. This is the only car where I have found this to be the case. Other insured drivers of this vehicle have said the same thing. The steering is also overly sensitive, and the car tends to veer heavily at even the slightest turn of the wheel. I als... (more)
Story
I remember driving to New York City for work with a co-worker. There were almost no spaces, but we found one spot that seemed pretty tight. Since the car is small, we were able to fit in the space. We had a great laugh about it, because he did not think that we would be able to fit.
Pros
It is inexpensive to maintain. Insurance on the vehicle is very low. It does well on gas. It is not a large vehicle, so I rarely have trouble finding parking, even in tight spaces such as parallel parking on a city street.
Cons
It is very hard to judge the speed of the car, because it often feels like I am driving much faster than I am. I have even had the speedometer checked, and it is accurate. I do not like the location of the gas tank, because it is inconvenient on the passenger side. Although inexpensive to maintain, it is often difficult to find parts for it. For example, I needed a new driver's side visor, and it has been several weeks, and the part has not been located. I also do not like the fact that the lock and unlock interior switch often sticks. I have to maneuver it with my finger to get it b... (more)
2000 Chevrolet Malibu - Great engineering destroyed by bad construction.
The 2000 Malibu was a great idea, roomy, great pickup, lots of power, and great features package for its time. Unfortunately, it was constructed with shoddy parts and was released with the "Dexcool" coolant that completely destroyed the cooling system and forced major recalls and thousands of dollars worth of repairs. What could have been a great car was destroyed by a bad decision (the coolant) and what was probably a series of corner-cutting to keep costs down at the factory.
Story
I was using the vehicle to drive from California to Ohio before we knew about the Dexcool fiasco. In one trip it broke down like five times. We had to replace the coolant tank, the cap, all of the hoses, and the radiator. The guy fixing the radiator accidentally stuck a screwdriver in my alternator and didn't tell us until the car broke down after we'd left the shop -- at 6pm on a Friday --... (more)
Pros
The engine has excellent power and pickup, and with a car this size, it really gets up and goes. The car is roomy, and the standard features are pretty good for the year it was made. It's strong enough to take a hitch and pull most anything, and the trunk is huge.
Cons
The Dexcool coolant they tried that year totally destroyed the coolant system. Any car that used it will probably need hoses, tank, cap, radiator, head gasket, and rear gasket all replaced at some point, and if Dexcool wasn't pinned as the reason before all the repairs, you likely found yourself replacing everything again later. If a car is still on the market that didn't have all that done, the likelihood is high that it still needs done. Aside from that, the controller for the fan goes out and has to be replaced or fixed every couple of years. The lights on the radio fail and cannot be ... (more)
