Audi V8 Quattro: A Rare Treat
I searched for this car for nearly a year and traveled half way across the country. This compact four door sedan has all wheel drive and V8 power. It is well made and a very unusual design for its vintage: 1990. I knew this car would provide the security of all weather performance and comfort which we needed in our rural environment. This is the third example of this model I have owned. Built in Germany it was imported for four years from 1990-1994 in small numbers. It was very expensive at that time, but my car was inexpensively priced at $6500 and had only 60,000 miles when I bought it. Thus nearly new, it represented nearly perfect automotive value.

The R8 is probably the only exotic that can be used as a daily driver. The main limiting factor is a lack of storage space for trips to Costco. It's very comfortable for distance driving. It's perfectly balanced because it almost drives itself. A lot of R8 owners feel that the V8 handles just a little better than the V10 but of course the V10 has more HP. The all-wheel drive helps it to handle securely in the rain. You'll get tons of attention. The R8s are still relatively rare, and they have a presence on the road because they are wider than any 911.

screaming 8,700rpm V10. Unusual juxtaposition. Audi, righteous doyenne of the Waitrose class, being one of the last bastions of natural aspiration. When all others are downsizing and turbocharging (to the detriment of noise and response) the R8 persists with a free-breathing 5.2-litre V10. It won’t always be like this. We know a V6 hybrid is coming – in fact we’re almost surprised it’s not here yet – but for the time being the range begins and ends with V10.
