The Toyota Matrix we own has a wonderful engine. It has never once broken down or given us any trouble in that regard. However, we do not like quite a few cosmetic/usage related things about it.

The Toyota Matrix has been a good vehicle purchase for me. I bought the car used (three years old) almost two years ago. I purchased the 'S' model which included all-wheel-drive and the larger 2.4L engine. Both of these features hurt the fuel economy a bit but it was weighed against the other trim options. With the S model the larger engine allows for a bit more performance and the all wheel drive is useful in case of snow or bad weather. With the S model it also includes an auxiliary audio line in, standard home power outlet, and a fold flat font seat which allows long items to be transported in the car. With the front and back seats down it is easy to transport lumber or an 8 foot ladder.
