2007 Dodge Dakota - Reliable workhorse that is easy on the checkbook.
The 2007 Dodge Dakota SLT Quad Cab is a strong work horse with high reliability and low cost of ownership. The v8 provides more than enough power on the highway and does not chug at all when the truck is full of cargo. The body, frame, and interior is rugged and durable without being uncomfortable for passengers. At 80,000 miles I have made few repairs outside of standard, scheduled maintenance for the vehicle (e.g. I have only needed to replace the o2 sensors, clean carbon off of the cylinder heads, and a couple other minor repairs). The ride is overall smooth (for a truck, of course) and has been comfortable for longer trips (e.g. 1,700+ miles). There is plenty of room for passengers and gear as well as baby seats (in both rear-facing and front-facing positions).
Historia
I have no specifically "memorable" stories. Lots of stories about filling the bed of the truck to the point that I was surprised I was able to back out of a driveway and a ton of stories about being nagged to help people move. Such is the life of a truck owner.
A Favor
Pros for this vehicle include: powerful engine for towing and accelerating on the highway, roomy and comfortable cabin in quad cab, rugged looks and durability to match, high reliability and low cost of ownership (with regards to non-standard repairs).
En Contra
Cons for this vehicle include: gas mileage is low due to weight, aerodynamics, and engine size; some visibility concerns while driving (e.g. A pillar creates a fairly severe blind spot when making turns, no back-up camera for parking, etc.); brake calipers create a fair amount of dust that fouls rims quickly; wind noise on the highway (minor complaint as this is a truck after all); smaller cargo capacity is an issue with the bed in the quad cab.
2007 Dodge Dakota - Good truck, but I paid a little too much
I bought this vehicle in 2005 used. I was looking for a sturdy vehicle that I could haul things in, if necessary. The Dakota fit the bill. It is a decent ride but was priced a little high at $13,900, used. I ended up with the 3.7 Liter, V-6 version which had plenty of power, and had not had many problems at all with it.
Historia
Since I have the 2WD version, winter is interesting. Although you can do some awesome doughnuts in the truck, it's probably better to weight it down for traction or pay a little more four the 4x4 version.
A Favor
The truck is very easy to figure out. Everything is easy to find in order to operate this vehicle. Height is perfect. Power is adequate and appropriate. Maintenance on this vehicle is very simple, because there are very few hidden parts to get to. Oil changes are very easy on this truck if you do them yourself - there is a lot of wide open space with everything in plain view.
En Contra
The first thing I noticed with this truck is that sometimes the RPM's will shoot up to 4,000+ RPM making you think the clutch is slipping, but it's the computer. It needs to be updated at the dealership. Also, wheel wells have a tendency to rust, so it behooves you to coat the bed of the truck with Herculiner or Rhinoliner for extra protection. Also, pay attention to suspension parts. On this model, there is a particular tendency for control arm bolts to seize to the point that they must be replaced.
