I love the way my Dakota drove. It was quiet inside. There was no road noise at all when driving. But one day, out of the blue, I was driving to a funeral, and I was on the highway, it was slightly raining outside. The roads were wet, and my transmission literally just stopped working. Like a light switch it went from working to non working on the freeway! I didn't have a wreck luckily, but it scared me. I had my mechanic fix the transmission, and that was very expensive and took a week to do. The mechanic told me that the Dakota trucks are prone to transmission problems. He has seen many of them in his years as a mechanic, and apparently Dodge has never fixed the problem. He said that even the newer Dakotas and Ram trucks are having these same issues. Other than the problem with the t... (more)

Going camping in the truck on my own. I sleep out in the open in the bed of the truck, under the stars. That was fun and memorable.
A Favor
Quiet inside, no road noise. Tires are affordable. Gets good gas mileage, about 23 mpg. Convenience of a truck but drives more like a car.
En Contra
Transmission went out at 90,000 miles.

Love this truck! This truck has been going strong for 17 years. I've travelled from California to North Carolina and many points in between. The interior materials are of lesser quality, but durable. The V8 engine requires little beyond regular maintenance. No issues with the transmission. It gets better fuel economy than a full size truck. The paint has held up remarkably well given the age and abuse it's been put through.

I took off on a weekend trip from San Antonio to El Paso, Texas. Since I had a lot of time to kill, I planned the trip using all dirt roads. I filled up the Jerry Cans, tossed a few jugs of water in the bed and cracked open a Red Bull and got to it. Rolling through Texas hill country out to the Western Mountains was a beautiful, breathtaking experience that I would recommend for anyone. The Da... (more)

Classic styling, high reliability, good off-road and foul weather performance. Handles well on and off-road. There is still a large after market for accessories and parts. Many internet forums have a wealth of information are still active. The truck is easily accessible for routine maintenance and repairs. The body is starting to give way to rust, but that can be expected after a few winters in northeast Ohio.
En Contra
The bed is too short for many things you would do in a full size. The factory sound system is lackluster, but upgrading the head unit and speakers is an easy task. The factory ash tray/coin holder breaks easily and falls out. These trucks have a problem with a linkage falling loose from the transfer case. It easily fixed with a $12 part from the dealership, but it had to be special ordered.
