## AWD vs FWD – What’s the Difference and Do I Need AWD?

While things like engine type, transmission, and interior options are important to consider when buying a car, the drivetrain configuration is just as essential. Two of the most common drivetrain types are front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD).

## Pros of All-Wheel Drive and Four-Wheel Drive

A front-wheel or rear-wheel drive vehicle can get stuck if the drive end of the car can't get a grip on the trail. With all-wheel drive, additional ground clearance and additional settings to direct power can be an asset to ensure better grip when the pavement crumbles and disappears.

## Cons

__Higher Costs__ 

In general, owning an AWD vehicle will be more expensive than a two-wheel drive car due to the extra fuel it takes to power the vehicle or the higher repair costs you may incur when getting something fixed on the drivetrain. 
Because of the complicated nature of an all-wheel drive system, AWD cars tend to be more expensive to own and maintain, especially when all the costs are added up over the years. If you are looking for the least expensive vehicle, all-wheel drive will not be your best bet in day-to-day use or annual repair and maintenance costs. 

__Not a Substitute for Winter Tires__

Sometimes, people who have all-wheel drive vehicles get lulled into a false sense of security when on the road. It is important to remember that AWD is not a substitute for all-season or winter tires. 
Just because you have all-wheel drive, that doesn't mean that you don't have to drive as carefully as possible when the weather starts to turn on you. If, however, you want a little more responsiveness and better handling than what you would get with the most basic vehicle, all-wheel drive may be a better option, and it could be well worth picking a car that either comes standard with AWD or has it available as an option.
