Though we’re calling it the Prime, Toyota renamed the PHEV RAV4 for 2025, now calling it the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid. Despite the change, the SUV retains its impressive powertrain, which incorporates a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor to make a combined 302 horsepower. Once Toyota’s second-quickest vehicle, the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid can make the run from 0-60 mph in under six seconds. At the same time, it offers 42 miles of electric-only range and a total driving range of around 600 miles.

The Escape PHEV offers a generous number of standard features and a compelling electric range. It’s powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that combines 210 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque, while continuously variable transmission sends power to the front wheels. The SUV feels lively at first, but the excitement fizzles at higher speeds, where it can take longer than expected to reach highway speeds or pass once it's there. That said, the Escape PHEV can tow up to 1,500 pounds, and it offers an electric-only range of 37 miles.

The Sorento comes in a staggering number of configurations and with three distinct powertrains. The plug-in hybrid model has a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that makes a combined 261 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, along with a six-speed automatic transmission, and standard all-wheel drive. The Sorento PHEV isn’t the quickest vehicle in its class, but the electric motor gives it strong off-the-line acceleration, and the system works together smoothly in heavy traffic. At the same time, the SUV offers 32 miles of all-electric range and up to 79 MPGe in combined driving.

Kia only offers the Sorento PHEV in higher trim levels, so it comes standard with perforated leather upholstery, along with heated and ventilated front seats. Other standard interior features include heated second-row seats and a heated steering wheel. Cargo space is below average at just 12.6 cubic feet with all three rows upright, but that grows to 45 cubic feet behind the second-row seats and 75.5 with the back two rows folded flat. The Sorento PHEV gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster as standard, while optional equipment includes Bluetooth, wireless smartphone mirroring, SiriusXM, navigation, wireless charging, a Bose stereo, a universal garage door opener, and a household power outlet.

Though it sold a three-row SUV in the RX-L for a short time, Lexus was lacking a family-hauling model until it introduced the TX for the 2024 model year. It comes with a 3.5-liter V6 and two electric motors, making a combined 404 horsepower, while all-wheel drive (AWD) is standard and power reaches the wheels through a continuously variable transmission. The TX offers 33 miles of range and a mostly smooth ride and it's surprisingly quick for such a large vehicle, reaching 60 mph from a standstill in less than six seconds. That said, the CVT makes the engine drone at highway speeds, which can become annoying.

The TX PHEV comes standard with six-passenger seating and captain’s chairs in the second row. The third-row seats are surprisingly spacious, but the seating position is a bit awkward and may be uncomfortable for taller passengers. Lexus equips semi-Aniline leather upholstery, powered front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated and ventilated second-row seats. That's a generous suite of standard features amd sets the TX apart from its rivals, but the SUV’s interior finishes aren’t as smart as those of many competitors. Despite that, the cabin is very spacious, and the seats are comfortable across all three rows.

The CX-90 debuted for the 2024 model year as Mazda’s new three-row flagship family-hauler. With many of the features seen in luxury SUVs, the CX-90 is a cut above most of its competitors for interior quality and design. The PHEV is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a 68kW electric motor, making a total of 323 horsepower. Rear-biased AWD is standard, giving the Mazda sporty but confident handling and solid acceleration. The CX-90’s driving experience is more engaging than that of its rivals, and it's one of few family-oriented new vehicles that offers a legitimately enjoyable experience.

A six-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels, and the powertrain has more than enough power for in-town commuting and highway cruising.

Hyundai’s infotainment system lacks some of the flash of its competitors’ interfaces, but its straightforward design makes it easy to use and less distracting from behind the wheel.

The Outlander PHEV is kind of an outlier among plug-in SUVs, but it offers a long warranty, a pleasant enough interior, and 38 miles of electric range. Power comes from a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors, which deliver 248 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. An electronically-controlled CVT sends power to all four wheels, and the Outlander has several drive modes that let the driver dial in the vehicle’s performance for the specific situation. That said, the handoff between gas and electric powertrain components isn’t the smoothest, and the system can feel a little clunky around town. Acceleration is strong, and the confident traction pairs with a smooth ride for a pleasant driving experience.
