__Powertrain:__  The 2023 Land Rover Defender 130 is the automaker’s three-row version of the popular Defender SUV that also comes in two-row (Defender 110) and the smaller two-door Defender 90. 

The 130 features your choice of two different engines, both of which are 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder mills. 

The lower-end P300 puts out 296 horsepower and the P400 puts out 395 horsepower. 

Both of these engines are turbocharged and feature a 48-volt electric motor mild hybrid system that helps slightly with the fuel economy.

__What’s New for 2023?__ 

The Defender 130 is brand new for the 2023 model year with this being the first time that the Defender is available with the longer wheelbase and three rows of seating. This results in a vehicle that is 13.3 inches longer than the Defender 110 and 30.5 inches longer than the Defender 90. 

While the extra passenger space is something that many Land Rover fans can appreciate, it also drastically changes the look of the classic SUV. It also brings the curb weight up to 5931 pounds, which is 158 pounds heavier than last year’s Defender 110. 

Perhaps one of the biggest differences between this model year’s all-new Defender 130 and the outgoing version of the smaller SUV is the features that it comes with standard unlike previous models, which had them as an option. 

These include a larger 11.4-inch touchscreen running Land Rover’s Pivi Pro infotainment system interface with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa connectivity and an air suspension system. On top of the addition of the third row, this new Defender also is available with a new Sedona Red exterior color for the first time.

__What’s Good?__

- The third row comes as a welcome addition to an already popular model

- The 130 doesn’t skimp on luxury features including heated seating, a Meridian sound system, and a supplemental sunroof

- Comfortable in both on-road and off-road situations

- With standard all-wheel-drive, a ground clearance of 11.4 inches, and the ability to ford 35.4 inches of water, the Defender 130 has off-road capability that other SUVs with a third-row seat simply don’t

__What’s Bad?__

- The long wheelbase throws off the proportions of a usually-classic-looking SUV

- The third row of seats cuts into cargo space, making it less than practical for long road trips and vacations 

- Poor fuel economy: 17 mpg city and 21 mpg highway

- Gets expensive

__Would we buy one?__ We'd consider it. Despite the unusual proportions and high MSRP, the Defender 130 is endlessly capable and practical, making it perfect for all kinds of applications and types of drivers.

For many years, the Land Rover Defender has been available in all kinds of configurations and variants and the Defender 130 is no exception. While the four-door Defender 110 and the two-door Defender 90 have been around for a while, the 130 marks the first time it has been available with something other than the front seats and second row. With a longer wheelbase and more headroom, the Defender 130 is designed to be as spacious as possible while competing with other full-size SUVs in the same category like the [Mercedes-Benz GLS](https://www.autolist.com/mercedes+benz-gls), [Lexus LX](https://www.autolist.com/lexus-lx+600), and [BMW X7](https://www.autolist.com/bmw-x7). Of course, this translates to a curb weight of nearly 6,000 pounds but for families who want the look of this 1940s-inspired SUV, it could be well worth it. 

The Defender 90 and 110 have a slew of engine options but the 130 has had its choices trimmed down to two, both of them 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-sixes. The base P300 engine puts out 295 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque while the P400 engine puts out 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. Both of these engines have a turbocharger and they run through an eight-speed ZF transmission. They also feature a 48-volt mild hybrid system, which helps with the acceleration, giving the Defender 130 a zero-to-60 time of 6.3 seconds with the P400 and 7.5 with the P300. For those who need serious capability with their comfort, the 130 also has an 8,200-pound towing capacity. 

On top of the powerful engine options, the Defender 130 is also extremely capable in all kinds of driving situations. This is helped by the all-wheel-drive and two-speed transfer case with a locking center differential. This, combined with the fact that the 130 is capable of wading through 35.4 inches of water, means there is almost no terrain that it can’t handle. This is supplemented by an air suspension system and a brake-by-wire setup that makes the Defender 130 feel incredibly agile, even with so much legroom. 

While there is enough underneath the hood to make the Defender 130 a good choice for all kinds of drivers, the real crown jewel is the interior. With enough room in all three rows for adults, it is designed to be comfortable for every passenger. There are also plenty of storage areas, even though the cargo capacity is a mere 81 cubic feet with the seats down. The materials are well-built and rugged and there are all kinds of padded surfaces, making it feel plush and luxurious, even with the maximum number of passengers. With available options like four-zone climate control, you can customize the interior to fit all your needs.

The Defender 130 is designed to be as comfortable and easy to drive as possible with a wide range of creature comforts and a responsive feel. 

The air suspension system takes some of the pressure off the steering wheel and stabilizes the front and rear axle, even in less-than-ideal conditions. 

Land Rover's Adaptive Dynamics system comes standard with the 130 and offers active terrain response so you can get the ideal settings for every type of road. 

For a full-size SUV, the Defender 130 is incredibly agile and has an athleticism that you might not expect when you first drive it.

Like the other Defenders on offer for the 2023 model year, the Defender 130 gets a host of standard safety and driver assistance features. 

To help with the larger body and longer wheelbase, the 130 comes with a surround-view parking assistance system that is perfect for small parking lots and tight spaces. 

The driving assistance features include automated emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assistance. 

Advanced traffic sign recognition also helps compensate for the large size of the Defender 130.

For years, Land Rover has been known for being on the higher end of the price spectrum and the Defender 130 is no exception. 

While you get the prestige of the nameplate and the rugged off-road capabilities you would expect from it, the price can easily get over six figures. 

The gas-guzzling inline-six engine can bring the overall cost of ownership of the Defender 130 up quite a bit, especially for commuters or people who take long trips. 

While you can get the base version of the 130 for well under $100,000, once you start adding options or if you want to opt for the P400 engine, you can expect to pay quite a bit above that.

One of the major benefits of the Defender 130 is that it comes with standard features that were only previously available as options on other models. 

The touchscreen infotainment system is 11.4 inches, which is much larger than other standard touchscreens in comparable SUVs. 

The standard driver assistance features like automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning, and lane-keeping assistance help keep you safe and make driving much easier. 

The Pivi Pro infotainment interface can receive over-the-air updates, making it a lot more practical and giving it better longevity in the future. 

Other Land Rover models have the dual-screen Touch Pro Duo interface, which is not nearly as intuitive or responsive.

The combination of the AWD, turbo inline-six, and the higher ground clearance gives the Defender 130 capability in almost any situation. 

The brake-by-wire system is quick-acting and brings the Defender 130 to a stop from 70 mph in 167 feet. 

While there isn’t as much cargo space as there is in other full-size SUVs in the same category, there is enough space in the rear seats to allow your passengers to sit comfortably, even on long trips. 

This new Land Rover Defender has quite a bit of overhang on the back, which may be an issue in extremely rocky terrain.

If there is one thing that Land Rover has always done well, it is combining ruggedness with high-end style and the Defender 130 is no exception. 

Even with the altered proportions of the 130, which help to accommodate the full-size third row, it still manages to strike a fairly impressive profile and stance. 

The interior is simple and incredibly well laid out with soft-touch surfaces everywhere, giving it a plush, luxury feel. 

The single touchscreen is much more elegant than the dual-screen setup that is in most other Land Rover models.

#### Fuel Efficiency: 3/5 stars

Even though the Defender 130 features a mild hybrid engine, its EPA-estimated fuel efficiency is abysmal. 

Both engines have a fuel economy rating of 17 mpg city and 21 mpg highway. 

When you compare this with other SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz GLS, which gets 20 mpg city and 24 mpg highway, it's easy to see how the cost of ownership for the 130 can add up. 

The bigger passenger and cargo area is excellent for longer trips and vacations but if you are planning on saving money while driving, you might be better off with another, comparable SUV.

It is important to remember that Land Rover is a premium automaker and even if you are purchasing something a little more practically-designed like the 130, you will still have to pay that premium price. 

The base version of the 130 is the __Defender S__, which comes with the lower-output P300 and 19-inch wheels. This version starts at $69,475, including the destination charge for getting it to the dealership.

After the base level, the next one up is the Defender SE, which starts at $79,775. This version comes with the P400 engine, 20-inch wheels, premium LED headlights, and fog lights. 

The next trim level up is the __Defender X-Dynamic SE__. This variant features 20-inch wheels in satin dark gray, all-season tires and a spare tire, an ebony leather interior, and 12-way heated and cooled seating. It starts at $82,875. 

After this version, the __Defender First Edition__ comes next, starting at $86,175. This tech-focused version of the 130 comes with a ClearSight rear view mirror, an interactive driver display, and a hotspot with a data plan. 

After that, the __Defender X__ is the next trim level up and it comes with 20-inch wheels with a diamond-turned finish, a vintage tan leather interior with ebony trim, a head-up display, and 14-way electric memory power seats. The Defender X starts at $101,375.
