I have had my Plymouth Neon for several years. When I purchased it from a dealership with a sketchy reputation, I have to admit I was concerned that it might be a lemon. It looked rough and the on the ride home I noticed several rattles and noises. I also could tell that this vehicle had been through a flood. I had purchased it because it was the only car that I could find within my very meager budget. When I got it home to my partner and her brother who are mechanics, they looked at me like I was crazy. After a thorough inspection, we were all surprised to find that the only parts that required replacement was the air filter, some brake pads, and a spark plug. Soon I was on the road and making my 140 mile daily commute in the old Neon. I drove it had for three years without any major ... (more)

My favorite memory of this vehicle is the day that I bought it and brought it home. I was desperate to purchase a vehicle and I only had $1500 to work with. A friend of mine suggested that I try a dealership in a scary part of Philadelphia. It was known for selling really cheap but beat up cars. I finally ran out of time and had to find something so I went to this car lot. There weren't very m... (more)
A Favor
My favorite feature of this vehicle is the gas mileage. I get about 34 miles to the gallon on highways. On city streets I get about 28 miles to the gallon. I also like the way it feels to drive the car. Its not too large and it is easy to maneuver in case of parallel parking. I've driven it home to visit my mother in upstate New York and it handles very well in the ice and snow. I always feel in control. The trunk is very large compared to the overall size of the car. The back seat folds down so that I can haul longer items if necessary. The interior is a charcoal gray color which is nice ... (more)
En Contra
I've experienced a few negative issues with my Neon. None of them have tarnished my overall opinion of the car very much, but they were cons nonetheless. I'm disappointed in the paint on the car. It has chipped in several places and in some cases very large chunks have fallen off. I have noticed this on other Neons that I have seen, so I assume this is a common problem. Its not a good look. The air conditioner has not held up like the rest of this vehicle. Every year it has required a re-charge and I have never had that issue with any other vehicle. Even after the charge, the air never get... (more)

The first and second generation Neons were America's most universal economy subcompact. And while they came loaded with features you'd expect on more expensive models during the 1990s, they had their fair share of wear items. The build quality is reasonably good, with little to no rust after 20 years. However, like many Chrysler products, the Neons had issues with their oil seals, as well as chipping paint, and unusually rapid brake pad wear. And they don't age gracefully, since they need sensors replaced more and more often as the years go by. Toward the late 1990's, it would likely be difficult to find a Neon that didn't leak engine oil, and that actually had a sunroof that ran smoothly in its mechanical tracks. Still, this car was the best bang for buck on a domestic-branded automob... (more)

The sunroof is great for dispatching drink items to rude tailgating drivers. Splat, and the culprit slows down and backs off as a messy drink cup explodes all over the offender windshield. A one-finger salute in the summer is also possible with the sunroof open.
A Favor
The car for its era achieved good fuel economy, getting at least 21 in the city and up to 26 or 27 miles per gallon on the highway. Despite the majority of engines being linked to a basic 3-speed automatic transmission, the set-up is easier to service and costs less in repairs should something go awry. The car has a reliable air conditioning system that is well-designed to run on the then-new industry standard refrigerant 134a. And while the Neon engine tends to hum and drone above 2,000 rpms, it is overall a smooth and reliable vehicle, especially its power steering, battery and alternato... (more)
En Contra
Unfortunately, while a driver may get his or her money's worth out of this vehicle's first 10 years of life, after that the Mexican-based manufactured parts start to show severe wear, with reliability issues. Ignition components such as spark plugs use older copper-lined points, which require spark plug replacement about every 20,000 to 30,000 miles. Normal brake pads only last about 30,000 miles, and are usually replaced with equally cheap rotors, instead of being re-machined and re-packed. Also, as the car hits the 10-year mark, its water pump and leaking radiator should definitely be re... (more)

My Plymouth Neon is a completely different car than my Dodge Neon. My Plymouth Neon has mechanical problems all the time. It was made in Mexico and has different parts that the Dodge Neon. Throughout the years that I've owned this car, the radiator went out four times and I had to replace the radiator four times. The thermostat also went out at least once a year and had to get that replaced as well. It overheats all the time especially in the summer. It causes me a lot of grief, and I can't believe that I still have it. It is an army green color, but the interior holds static and shocks me when I get out of the car. It is not as good on gas mileage as my other Neon is. I don't drive this car a lot. I use it for a back-up car in case something happens to my Dodge. The heater and air con... (more)

Last summer it overheated in my small town's square, and I had to have it towed to my uncles to fix it. Luckily, I was close to home and walked back to my house.

En Contra
Parts are not dependable, overheats by the radiator, overheats by the thermostat, heater makes noise, air conditioner makes noise, ugly color and made in Mexico.
