My 2011 Subaru Outback is one of the best cars I've owned. It handles well in wet and snowy conditions just as well as on drive pavement. The ride is smooth. Seats are comfortable for me as a 5'3" driver and my spouse who is over 6'. The rear seat has plenty of room for two adults to sit comfortably or three smaller adults (or middle school girls). I can easily fit all the groceries from my weekly trip in the back or load up the camping gear for a Girl Scout overnight. While this car is used most often for short daily commutes, it has also been used for longer vacation trips and it well suited for both. When I use this vehicle for driving with Uber I am often complimented by the riders for the fit, comfort, and smooth ride of the car as well as how nice it looks. A feature I wasn't awa... (more)
Historia
When I first brought home this Outback my husband was driving a work provided vehicle. His vehicle was also a Subaru and nicknamed Subby by the company. My Outback gained then name Subby Deux and people who know us call it that when we go places.
A Favor
The Subaru Outback is a great fit for the SUV lover who would like something a little smaller with better gas mileage. It was difficult for me to give up the SUV size but with this vehicle I still sit higher than a small car and have extra room. The hatchback storage is large and holds plenty.
En Contra
I've only encountered two negatives so far with this vehicle. First, the heat does not blow very strong at the floor. It is not a temperature issue but rather a floor blower issue. Upon checking the web I found this is a common complaint about the vehicle The only other issue I've had is that at times the check engine light will light up following a fuel refill. This too is a common issue apparently and will reset after three trips if the gas cap is removed and then replaced.

1986 Subaru Outback - Love it.

I actually have a model that's not listed, it is a Subaru DL. You can drive Subaru's until they die and this one hasn't died yet. It is old, and I have put 375,000 miles on the same engine. I replaced its transmission with a rebuilt one, and it still drives as well as ever. It has always had great fuel economy, listed as being 26 mpg, but I used to get 32 mpg. Now I get around 28 mpg & I do mostly highway driving. It is not air-conditioned, so I have made numerous modifications to it, as in a window swamp cooler, solar powered window fans, and tinted windows, because I drive it in the desert. It is easy to work on so I could do most tune-ups for less cost myself. It is old so it is not extremely quiet, but it runs well. It still handles quite well, but not as well as some newer cars.

I would often drive out on rural dirt roads at night watching for rodents. They got to know me and would come to the road at the sound of my engine, because I would sprinkle seeds along the road. This car is great for carrying the trapped rodents I needed to keep alive because I could control the desert temperature inside the car at night. During the day, I would drape a white canvas tarp over... (more)
A Favor
Best things about this car are its fuel economy, the higher chassis, since I drive it on unpaved roads in rural areas, and the low maintenance needs. Things do not wear out that fast in this car. Mechanics tend to love working on Subaru's, too. If you can find a good mechanic, he/she will like working on it.
En Contra
It is gray; the same color as the highway so I have to have my headlights on even in the daytime because other cars ahead of me won't notice me. It is a pain changing timing belts. Changing fuel filters is NOT fun in this car. Since it is older, it is getting hard to find parts for it, but I can usually find good tune-up parts, like filters, oil, brake pads, spark plugs. However, tires are difficult to get in the original sizes. They keep wanting me to buy smaller wheels, which makes the higher chassis impossible to keep.
