2005 Ford Escape - Great handling on the road

I believe that my 2005 Ford Escape has great handling on the road. When I go to turn corners, I am able to do so quickly and easily. I like the red color of my vehicle, despite the fact that because of its age, the vehicle has rust. Also, the vehicle which I bought last year has over 220,000 miles. When I run the heat or the air conditioning, it smells as if oil is being burned off the engine. I cannot see an active leak, so I am not sure what is happening. Due to my financial situation, I am not able to get the car into a mechanic like I should.
Story
It was great going with my best friend fishing to one of the lakes at night.
Pros
The way it drives and turns corners is a great positive. So is the way that it is great to go to recreation areas like state parks and will hold fishing and recreational equipment. I also like the way that it sits.
Cons
The negative that I most notice is the burning of the oil whenever I run my air conditioning or heating. The car itself does not seem to overheat, but I am afraid sometimes to take this vehicle out of town on road trips. The other negative thing is that I don't get good gas mileage. I cannot give specifics, but I know that compared to other vehicles, it just does not provide the type of mileage that is beneficial to gas savings. Also, periodically, the car alarm goes off, even though no one is messing with it.

I own a 2003 Ford Escape 6 cylinder vehicle. I bought it new and it still only has 70,000 miles on the odometer. It's been very dependable and the only repairs / replacements that I have encountered have been the brakes.
Story
My girlfriend and I used it for camping.
Pros
The car is a 4 door. It seats 5 people quite easily. The back hatch door has plenty of head clearance the interior is easy to keep clean. It has good gas mileage for a 13 year old vehicle.
Cons
It did not come with any towing equipment. I wouldn't recommend towing with it. Replacement parts are expensive.
