2000 Ford Focus - Poorly Built; Many Recalls
This car was purchased for economy and gas mileage. I was not interested very much in the style. It was reasonably comfortable in the front but tight in the back seat. Unfortunately, it was the first model year and there were many problems. It became quickly clear that important structural parts such as bearings (we went through 3 within a year) and tire studs (one twisted and broke with hand turning) were not made robust enough and overall we experienced 17 separate recalls on ours. At one point, when the engine light went on, the dealership kept the car some ten weeks during which we put 8,000 miles on a loaner car.
Story
Not really. Although, despite the closeness to the ground, we were able to visit some state and national parks whose roads were pretty rough and it held up pretty well for that stuff.
Pros
It got pretty good mileage on the highway. It handled okay although it was difficult to see out the mirrors. It braked okay and the brakes lasted a reasonable amount of time. After several years, the car seemed to become more reliable and we had less trouble with it as it got older. The car is still on the road, but just barely.
Cons
This car had 17 recalls. It was not roomy, and it seemed that the trunk was oddly shaped so that no matter what you tried to put in it you had a heck of a time fitting it. The back seats had no leg room and had to be folded down from inside the truck. The car was very noisy and before too long the dashboard seemed to develop a new rattle every day. Small parts all over broke easily just through regular use, such as the clip that holds the hood latch pull, fuse holders, and such. And of course, the legendary Ford safety belts that seems to always get stuck in the car door or trapped where y... (more)
2001 Ford Focus - 17 recalls and a six-inch high pile of repair invoices.
The 2001 Ford Focus has to be one of the most poorly built cars I ever experienced. For the first half of my ownership, I had to deal with seventeen recalls. While changing a tire, the stud was so weak that it broke when I was trying to remove the lug nut by hand. I had to have three bearings replaced. The headlight lenses yellowed so much that they did not pass inspection one year. The cheapest materials. The list goes on and on. When the engine light went on, the dealership kept the car for 10 weeks trying to figure out the problem. But then, over the last eight years, I have not had too many problems. Perhaps because I moved to a hot, dry western state.
Story
Well, I have to admit it took me into places many people would not have ventured, but this was after the initial troubles. Despite a low wheelbase, it managed to get through some perilous state park roads. It also handled well in snow and ice when I lived up north (if you know what you are doing).
Pros
The only things I can say positive about this vehicle is that the gas mileage was excellent, and that it is still somehow lasted 15 years.
Cons
Poor quality materials. Many recalls. Apart from the things I complained about in the review, the trunk was oddly shaped making it difficult to put almost anything in it that looked like it should fit. The seats could be very uncomfortable over long periods of driving.
