Enjoyable to drive. Not always easy to maintain.
The 2005 Ford Taurus SE is a pretty decent vehicle to own; however, there are aspects about the car that make me "on the fence" about the car. The gas mileage is not great as compared to newer cars; however, you do get a lot more room inside the passenger space and the trunk. I get 24 mpg (6 cyl) on average (highway\city). My perspective comes from the that of a new "shade tree mechanic" (aka DIY'r). Some of the basic maintenance tasks are very difficult to do because of the design of the vehicle. For example, changing the spark plugs on the firewall side is very difficult because of the layout of the engine compartment. The engine is in sideways, so 3 spark plugs are on the front, and the other three on the back. Another example is the need to disassemble part of the plastic cover below the windshield to change the cabin air filter. The last example I will provide is the difficulty in changing the oil filter. The position is very awkward, and I make a mess every time. The car is pretty reliable; however, there are common problem areas. For example, the power steering system is very noisy. The only resolution is to replace the component with a compatible, quiet one from another Ford vehicle. However, there are a lot of other Taurus owners who are active on Taurus specific blogs, so getting advice is easy. I do enjoy driving the Taurus as it is pretty smooth on the road. For the used older Taurus's, I would recommend someone be able to work on it yourself as maintenance is very important to keep the bull running. If you take it to the shop for everything, then you will end up paying a fortune.

Workable piece of junk
I like that the Ford Taurus is a step above the Ford escort. It's an automatic, which is always good. I have over 100,000 miles on it and it is still going despite the occasional hick-up. Overall, it's a decent car for what I paid for it and it's still running despite some problems with the heater and some internal noises. It has only overheated once but I managed to fix it. It rides a little rough but it has plenty of trunk space and room for passengers.
