After leaving the U.S. market in 1997 -- and being discontinued globally in 2016 -- Land Rover's iconic Defender has returned. Debuting at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show and set to go on sale in the U.S. in 2020, the Defender is a utilitarian SUV. The Defender 90 is the two-door, five-passenger version, while the Defender 110 is the four-door version, five or seven-person hauler.

The Defender 90 is a two-door model that will have two rows of seats. Most versions will seat five people but there will be an optional jump seat in between the two front seats for six-passenger seating.

The 90 will come with a single engine option: a mild-hybrid setup called the P400.

It will use a turbocharged, inline six-cylinder engine plus an electric supercharger powered by a 48-volt lithium-ion battery to produce 395 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque.

An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard on the 90 and the 110.

The '90' used to refer to the previous-generation's wheelbase, but in this new model, the 90's wheelbase is 101.9 inches.

### 2020 Land Rover Defender 110 photos:

The Defender 110 starts at $50,925, including destination, and will go on sale in the U.S. in Spring 2020. The 90 model will launch several months after that.

The Defender 110 has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine dubbed the P300 as its base offering. It makes 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The 110 will also be offered with the larger P400 mild-hybrid engine.

Another option will be Wade Sensing, a feature that detects when the vehicle is driving through water up to three feet deep. When it does, the system will cut the throttle response, recirculate cabin air, adjust the standard air suspension to its highest setting and lightly drag the brakes when out of the water to dry the rotors.

Another option will be a camera-based system that displays an image of the road or trail in front of the vehicle, creating an unobstructed view of what's below and in front of the vehicle's hood.
