Best Station Wagons for 2022 and 2023

By Evan Walton | August 30, 2022

Not long ago, automotive manufacturers would produce and sell station wagons in the United States as often as they now produce SUVs and crossovers. There was a time when Ford, Honda, Toyota, BMW, and Cadillac made their variants of station wagons to meet consumer demand.

However, this affinity for the station wagon body style has faded, and only a few vehicle manufacturers are still producing the wagon body style for the 2022 and 2023 model years.

The demand for station wagons in the United States has diminished to the point that even some prominent 2021 model year station wagons have been discontinued; see the Buick Regal Tour-X. There remains hope, however, for all station wagon enthusiasts who love the elongated roofs, open cargo areas, and right-angle rooflines that only station wagons provide.

The station wagons on our list are not just a few remaining wagons available but are wagons that provide athleticism and ample cargo space. Select automotive manufacturers are continuing to build station wagons for the continued pleasure of consumers desiring the unique station wagon experience. Here is a list of the ten best station wagons available as a new car, either a 2022 or 2023 model year.

2023 Audi A4 Allroad

As Audi’s junior station wagon representative, the 2023 Audi A4 Allroad is designed with luxury and adventure in mind. The A4 Allroad has a lifted suspension, providing it with more ground clearance than the A4 sedan. It is equipped with all-wheel-drive (AWD) standard, making it a more capable off-road vehicle than its sedan base.

For the 2023 model year, Audi made LED headlamps standard across all trim levels and introduced a new Black Optic package which includes 18-inch wheels, black exterior trim, a Manhattan Gray paint job, and black exhaust tips. The Black Optic package is only available on the Premium Plus and Prestige models, only leaving the ability to add it to the base Premium model.

The 2023 Audi A4 Allroad offers a singular powertrain of the A4 sedans’ turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 261 horsepower paired with a 12-volt hybrid system, seven-speed automatic transmission, and Audi’s Quattro AWD system. A singular powertrain option makes nailing now miles-per-gallon (mpg) a bit easier to discern. The Audi A4 Allroad achieves 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway for a combined average of 27 mpg.

The A4 Allroad offers an attractive interior cabin made of rich materials and is only second to the interior found in the Volvo V90. Audi was one of the first automotive manufacturers to bring Wi-Fi and data plans into vehicles. They continue to innovate with their MMI infotainment system. The optional Virtual Cockpit, operated by Audi’s MMI infotainment system, offers a high-resolution configurable display in place of a traditional gauge cluster and can feature real-time Google Maps overlays of your surrounding environment.

A new Turbo S version is also available for the 2022 model year, delivering 620 horsepower through a turbocharged V8 engine. Porsche is aware of the shift in consumer desire for electric vehicles and offers their most fuel-efficient variant of the Panamera 4 Sport Turismo as a plug-in hybrid.
