The Mazda 3 is a great car. I've owned mine for over five years and have driven it across the country. I've put over 70,000 miles on the car. The gas mileage is great, as it's consistently 35 mpg between city and highway driving. I haven't had any major issues with the car other than needing to replace the water pump belt. I would recommend this to a friend.
Story
When I first moved to Saint Louis, I needed to make a trip to Ikea for furniture and necessary things. The hatchback gave me the ability to transport chairs, long rugs, lamps, and lots of boxes. Having this car has helped me with making less trips places because of the amount of space in the car with the back seats folded down. I have even had friends call me to help transporting furniture,... (more)
Pros
I like the look of the car, and the handling is great. I bought the car because of the amount of space for packing (hatchback version) and for the good gas mileage. The car hasn't had any major issues, which surprises me given it's nearing 100,000 miles. My favorite feature is the cruise control on several of the long trips I've had to take. Overall, it's been a great car.
Cons
The only negative issues deals with its handling in snow, ice and noise. My car is a front-wheel drive car, so perhaps if it were all-wheel, that would change the issue. Even with snow tires, the car slips around more than I would like. I think there is a bit too much road noise when driving high speeds on the interstate. It's not the worse car for road noise, but it's also not the best.

2008 Mazda Mazda3 - Very displeased.

The exterior does not feel very sturdy, it is made of cheap plastic and the hubs are gradually falling apart. One finally broke apart the other day. The interior is better. There are signs of wear on the steering wheel, dash, and doors but the seat material looks brand new still. The car steers well and has decent acceleration for a four cylinder engine but you feel vulnerable in such a small car on the highway. At $12,000, I feel I paid way too much for this car.
Story
I took it on a road trip with my friends to Florida a couple of years ago. Along the way we stopping in Nashville and Atlanta to bar hop and site see. The car broke down passing through the mountains. The good memories weren't so much about the car but about the trip and good time with friends. The car was just the literal vehicle to our memorable time.
Pros
I like the sports shift option for added power to a weak 4-cylinder engine. The wear-resistant seat material is nice. The compact size makes the car maneuver very easily and it handles well. It gets OK gas mileage.
Cons
Loose parts underneath rattle, it lacks power windows and locks, there is no cruise control, and the tires do not get a reliable seal on the rim. The air conditioning frequently goes out. Changing the headlight bulbs is laborious because of the design. Once part of the headlight broke off while changing the bulb and they don't sell that part individually so now I need to spend $500 to replace an otherwise good headlight. The interior also gets overwhelmingly hot in only a little bit of sunshine.
