To start with, this car has a ton of history. It was built to compete against the Italians in the Monte Carlo race. Now it has kind of become considered a "girl car", but in some circles it is deemed one of the most individual cars and one of the best performers out there. From the factory, there is unlimited customization and even more after market customizations. While parts and repairs might cost a little more than most cars (because it is essentially a BMW), there really have not been any major issues. When I say go-kart, I mean it. The steering is extremely responsive. You turn the wheel an inch, it jerks you across the road, but in the best possible way. It is the most fun thing I have ever driven. It drives just like a go-kart.
Story
There is such a huge cult following for this car that every region seems to have a Mini Owners club full of Mini enthusiasts. We go on trips, blast through canyons and attend worldwide events. MINI owners feature some great people.
Pros
Incredible handling, glorious supercharger whine (or turbo in the later models), unlimited customization both in appearance and performance, more room than it seems, hatchback adds cargo room. My car was very "bare bones" (I don't even have cruise control) but it is available with all of the features other cars have.
Cons
Seats are kind of small and uncomfortable, clutch spring is extremely stiff, cruise control not standard. As much as I love the car, I hate taking it on long trips.

2004 MINI Cooper - I love it, but would buy a newer model if I purchased again

I purchased this car looking for a fun car that I would enjoy driving and take care of. It has great gas mileage, excellent handling, and is sporty and fun but still functional. It has not disappointed me, but being an older model there are a few bugs in the system that have been worked out in later models. I love the idea of my car, but mechanically it is still inferior to later models.
Story
I remember test driving it on a back country road and knowing instantly it was the car for me. The old lady pulling out in front of me was a little scary, but the excellent handling helped that situation.
Pros
Great gas mileage is a huge pro, but the tank is a little small, so you will have to fill up regularly still. On the highway I think the mileage is better than the estimated mileage. The sound system had good quality sound, but nothing fancy. Handling is the biggest pro. It is always up to the challenge, I can take curves a little faster than everyone else, and not even think about it. Other cars feel heavy and top heavy in comparison.
Cons
Electrical problems. The amp for the "premium sound" system went out, and it was very expensive to replace. What's worse is that this is a common problem, yet no solution has been offered by Mini. The seats and interior are a little cheap, something that has been addressed in later models. Service costs are ridiculously high, but I haven't had any serious mechanical problems, just oil changes.

The cleanliness and atmosphere of the building is a great first impression, and they really know how to present their cars. The staff was really friendly and professional. They know that Minis sell themselves, so they aren't super pushy, and they don't seem sleazy. They are very willing to work with you and answer any questions you may have. They have a great business model.
