Perfect for highway driving, the Subaru Forester averages 30 miles to the gallon, and the engine provides more than adequate acceleration for merging on to the highway. Though not flashy, the car is dependable, and the interior is spacious and comfortable. Sight lines are plentiful and blind spots are rare to find. Recently I drove the Denali National Park during their annual road lottery. The park road is 92.5 miles of twisting, narrow gravel road traversing through tundra and mountain passes. The day was cool and wet and shoulders were soft, but the Forester handled blind corners with ease and didn't break a sweat through Polychrome Pass where one wrong move would mean a tumble down a mountain as there are no guardrails at any point along the road. The interior is quiet and well ... (more)
Story
Driving through Polychrome Pass in Denali National Park we spotted caribou on the tundra far below. The day was wet and the shoulders were soft, and stopping along the road, going downhill towards a cliff, was a risky thing to do, but the Forester stayed in control, and we were able to stop and watch in awe as the herd ran across the tundra, thousands strong.
Pros
My favorite feature of the vehicle are the heated seats. When it's -20 in Alaska and the car has been sitting outside all day, it's nice to come out to the car and have it start right away and turn the seats on. When one's bum is toasty warm, the rest doesn't much matter on the 20-minute drive home. I love that I can see easily see from all points of the vehicle, and the blind spot is very minimal. I feel safe and in control when driving and as a passenger.
Cons
The gas mileage shrinks when driving through town versus highway, and there are so many Foresters in the world that it's nothing special to drive.

2006 Subaru Forester - Efficient, perfect Alaska vehicle.

The styling is alright, although I usually prefer Subaru's which are closer to the ground. I am a huge fan of the hatchback look. The seats are very comfortable and has plenty of storage compartments/cup holders. The gas mileage could be improved, and the certain one I have cannot get below half a tank of gas, otherwise it will malfunction. I would prefer having battery operated key to start the car on a cold morning before I go outside, but it's doable. Very good grip and maneuverability on icy roads, and is extremely easy to control skids in. All the different storage spaces are very handy, yet the car seems to have no auxiliary cord. Also, it receives weather radio which comes very much in handy when expecting bad weather or making a long trip. The truck is large enough to sleep in ... (more)
Story
Not yet, just moved to a new city!
Pros
A ton of specialized compartments Great grip and driving in bad weather Heater warms up VERY fast
Cons
Gas nozzle completely comes off when filling tank up No auxiliary cord would like it to be a bit lower gas mileage could be better, but is great for a 4WD

I was very specific about finding a first generation Subaru Forester. The dealer called when they a customer traded in their old Forester. The dealership had the windshield replaced for free before purchasing the vehicle. The customer service provided by the service technicians has always been great. The parts dealer also regularly organizes group buys on OEM parts.
