This is the second Subaru I've owned, and I have loved them both. I used to live in Colorado where the all-time 4WD was more important than in the South.
Story
I have truly enjoyed going on long car trips with my kids around North Texas. It is a comfortable ride for sightseeing.
Pros
I really love the all-time 4WD. It helps even in mildly bad weather. The reason I purchased this vehicle compared to similarly sized vehicles in my price range was because the back seat is wide enough to put a car seat and two adults comfortably. Since my purchase, I have had the frequent need to put three car seats across the back seat, and the Outback has accommodated that need. There is enough room to fit five people as well as ample trunk space. In addition, I have been able to haul relatively large items by laying down the back seat.
Cons
The only major malfunction I have had with the Outback is that every year (approximately) I have to replace the battery. I have read on forums where other owners have had this problem as well. The salesperson told me when I purchased the vehicle that some people are not fond of the continuous variable transmission. I have found that it makes a whirring sound but is otherwise not a problem.

My Subaru Outback has over 100,000 miles on it, and it's still rollin'! The exterior is a blue so dark that it almost appears black. It has 4-wheel drive which helps it to drive smoothly over the rough dirt road my house is off of. The clearance is a good 12 inches off the ground, which is something that really helps.
Story
I live in a rural area, off a dirt road. Sometimes after rainy weather, the road becomes jutted, rocky, and hard to drive over with other types of vehicles. Mine, however, drives over it like it's driving over the smoothest road out there.
Pros
One of my favorite features are the door lights that come on at the bottom edge of the door. This helps me to see when I step in and out of the car. The clearance and 4-wheel drive are my favorite features. I like the windshield wiper settings.
Cons
The stereo system is somewhat poor. The speakers aren't that great.

Salesman was honest and very helpful throughout the process. He did try to upsell but didn't pressure us for anything we didn't want. He showed us comparable options and was ok when we wanted to order from the factory.
