I really love my Subaru Outback. I bought this car because I moved to the mountains and needed a car that could handle in all weather. I had had a few ice episodes that had really scared me. When I got the Outback, it was winter. In a very short time, I found myself going up the icy mountain road. We slipped a little but never more than an inch (seriously). I knew then that it really was possible to drive in icy conditions with this car. I never felt so safe and happy with a buying decision. It also works great handling the curves in faster driving conditions in the sun and rain. The seats are comfortable, and I love the seat warmers. The size is perfect for our family of four, and when we go on big trips, we add a rack container to the top for more storage. That is super easy and sure... (more)
Story
I got caught trying to open the door of an almost identical Outback in a parking lot in the Sierras (mountains) of California. I thought the key wasn't working, and then a man walks up to me to ask why I am trying to get in his car. I explain that I thought it was mine and we laugh. I then look around for my own car to find there are two more Outbacks between his car and mine. It is popular in... (more)
Pros
I love the handling in the ice and snow. I go slow and stay in control on the ground. I love the comfortable seats (I've had cars before that I couldn't not sit in for hours). I really like the trunk area and how it leads into the back seat if you need it to. I have been surprised and what I can get in there.
Cons
I haven't been able to fine seat covers for the back seats that really fit. Also, the sound of the engine is louder than most, but I am not bothered by that too much. Also, I do go through tires more with this car, but that is also probably because I almost exclusively drive mountain roads and 20% of them are not paved.

Went looking for a new car with the mindset of it being a future family car, and a more practical and fuel efficient choice than the '02 WRX that it would be replacing. After much research, I had my heart set on an AWD CX-5 fully teched out and optioned. Unfortunately for the Mazda, the dealership also sells Subarus, and being that I really liked my WRX, felt that the Outback was worth a test drive. To quote the sales man "The worst part about test driving an Outback, is that you will forget about the other cars, and will be driving away with an Outback." He was right. Test drove, and quickly went to talking color, pricing, and options. My wife and I drove away with a lovely 2.5i (the non-turbo edition) red with cream interior Outback, and have enjoyed every minute owning it.
Story
Drove the Outback up to the family cabin during a heavy snow storm and did not lose grip, or have any issues the entire time. The conditions didn't phase the outback in the least... which really is no surprise since in the winter Subarus out number any other make in the area.
Pros
For being a 2.5 naturally aspirated engine, the Outback has a lot of oomph and does well with the mountain passes that it sees daily on my commute. The ride is smooth, high enough for off-roading, and very nice for traffic. The cabin is roomy, comfortable, and well laid out. While many will claim that the infotainment system is horrible, I find that it is one of my favorite things about the car. It is very intuitive, unobtrusive, and with the base sound package installed puts the Bose system in the Mazda to shame.
Cons
Subaru still suffers from the same constrictive tailgate design as my '02 WRX, so while the back end is very spacious, the opening is not. For example, a 4ft wide piece of plywood can lay flat in the back, but you wont be able to get it in since the opening blocks some of that width. 2.5 engine does have enough oomph, but I do wish I had sprung of the 3.5 Turbo. There have been a few instances where the extra acceleration would have been highly useful.

The customer service from top to bottom is great. The sales man I worked with, Ricky, was great. I also personally worked with the head of financial loans and he bent over backwards for me to get my car.
