Subaru Outback Owner Ratings & Reviews

2008 Subaru Outback - Head gaskets ruin everything.
The Subaru Outback is a great car that is marred by a single serious issue. The engine, although sufficiently powerful and torque has an issue where the head gaskets give up at around 80,000 miles. Otherwise, the car performs admirably. The all wheel drive system ensures that there is plenty of traction to go around and the four speed automatic, though ancient and inefficient is fairly refined and smooth. The off road performance is outstanding, with sufficient ground clearance to take on and out perform many trail rated SUV's at their own game. The car gets fairly decent mpg's considering its all wheel drive system, and with one exception, the maintenance costs are very reasonable.
Story
I really enjoyed road tripping up through Northern California in this car. It handled off-road with such ease that it could have been designed with rocky off-road passes in mind.
Pros
The Outback looks nice, has great visibility and virtually no blind spots. It is ridiculously roomy and will comfortably seat 5 adults with luggage. The performance is there, although the engine's 170 hp is not enough to make the car feel fast. Where the car truly shines however is off road and in the wet. The all wheel drive system is superb, and there is no question that it is one of the best in the world. The seats are comfortable enough for long road trips and the stereo is nice and bassy enough for most people.
Cons
The car suffered from catastrophic head gasket failure at around 80,000 miles. Normally, this would be a non issue because on normal cars, the head gasket is located on top of the engine and can be replaced for under ~$100. On a Subaru however, thanks to the horizontally opposed cylinder configuration, the entire engine has to be dropped out of the car - an expensive and time consuming procedure that costs around $2500. In a car that has already depreciated significantly, this cost is too much for most to bear. Aside from that, the only other issue is that the four speed automatic is truly... (more)
2006 Subaru Outback - Ok I guess
The car was great for rugged expeditions. It worked well when traveling to mountainous regions, and non-paved roads. It preformed decently for day to day use even though it did break down or have problems every now and then. The room in the trunk was very good for medium amounts of storage and the trunk was very open making it easy to get what I needed from it.
Story
Not very many stories in particular.
Pros
I really enjoyed that the car had AWD and could work over the majority of all surfaces you rode on. I really enjoyed how much space there was more than enough space in the trunk to hold everything I needed to hold. I also liked that the car had very comfortable seats and you could easily relax while in them.
Cons
I really disliked the gas mileage for this car. It did not like how often I had to fill it with gas and how much it cost me. I also didn't like the fact that the car always seemed to have problems that required fixing. That cost a good deal of money on its own. The car also seemed to have a small spot in which air was coming in. This spot made a lot of noise while driving on the freeway.
