I have a 2000 beetle. I bought it when I was 19 and I am 21 now and have had a few problems but not many. I got it used from an old woman who did not really drive it at all so there was only like 3000 miles on it. It's really low to the ground so every bump and crack I can feel.
Story
The night me and my friends spent the day before I left for college was pretty memorable. We basically drove around all day and around the city and just spent time together before we all went our own ways.
Pros
Gas is great. I go to school two hours away from my house and I can make it there on a half of tank of gas.
Cons
Super small not really useful of you are moving a lot of stuff. The parts that are positions under the hood are really weird. A lot of the stuff are stacked over stuff so sometimes changing your window wiper fluid or other simple tasks like that is hard because you have to take stuff apart to get to it. Also super low to the ground.

I had wanted a Volkswagen Beetle since I was a little kid, so I jumped at the chance to purchase one new in 2000. I chose a silver sport model. I loved the way it looked and felt when driving. It definitely had personality, I named it Nigel. At the time, beetles were fairly new, having just returned to the market and I loved the uniqueness of that but over time it seemed like everybody was driving a silver beetle and that sometimes made finding MY beetle in a parking lot difficult! It was a fun little car to drive, but there were a lot of maintenance issues. Even simple maintenance tasks, like changing a headlamp or tail light had to be done at the dealer, because a special and very expensive tool was required to get into the bulb compartments. It seemed to eat oil, I frequently had to... (more)
Story
At the time, there were so many silver Beetles that they seemed to be everywhere. One day I came out of the mall and opened the door to the car and got in. Then I looked around, realized that this car was FAR too tidy to be mine, and discovered that I had gotten in the wrong silver Beetle! I quickly exited the car, all the while looking around to see if anyone had seen me in the wrong car.
Pros
The car was definitely fun to drive, I had wanted a beetle since I was a little girl and I loved the way it looked. I loved the profile of the car. Because it had the same frame as my boyfriend's silver Audi TT, it was always funny to park next to his car, because next to the Beetle, his looked like a Beetle that had just deflated. The gas mileage was decent, although not spectacular. The silver color was easy to keep looking clean. In the early days, it got a lot of attention. I was often asked by strangers if I liked the car and how well it drove. The bud vase in the dash was a fun littl... (more)
Cons
Almost all maintenance had to be done at the dealer. Because a special and very expensive tool was required to get into the compartments that housed headlamps and tail lights, every lamp that burned out had to be replaced at the dealer at a cost of $50 per, and I have never had a car that burned out so many lamps. It seemed like at least every three or four months I had to go in for a new one, and more than once it caused me to get pulled over by the cops for a burned out lamp. It also ate oil. I almost always had to add oil in between normally scheduled services. It also began to have ele... (more)
