Tallahassee, FL Driving Tips
So, you're driving in Tallahassee. If it's game day, go back home and wait it out. Pretend you're snowed in. It's like hell to do anything on game day because you'll be competing with people who have never known anyone going to Florida State University. This might even be their first time in Tallahassee. Don't risk it. On any other given day, you'll only be competing with frat stars in their parents' luxury cars, scooterists, and normal people who just want to get from point A to point B. Watch out for speed traps, because Tallahassee PD loves playing with radar guns. They also have a Hawkeye and will write you merciless tickets for seatbelt violations. Unfortunately, they couldn't care less about car break-ins and theft. Getting robbed isn't super common, but you have to know where not to park. Find a well-lit area, lock your doors, glove box, and anything else you can lock. People are crazy about towing here, too. Make sure that you're parked legally unless you have a spare $90 to throw at the crooks operating the impound lots.
Tallahassee, FL Buying Tips
Being a student, I haven't seen many car lots around the university area. There are, however, a few dealerships in Killearn. Unfortunately, they pride themselves in expensive import vehicles and don't offer many reasonably priced vehicles. Just check out Craigslist. It'll make your life way easier.
Favorite driving memory
Headed down Tennessee street on a night that Florida State University had a home football game, I was mooned. Not just by a pedestrian, or someone who wanted to give me a big ol' pressed ham against a storefront window, but by someone in a moving vehicle. They were in a 'party bus', of which there are plenty in the city. Just imagine it, you're trying to get home after a long day of work, and some drunk frat star decides to be wise guy and bare his ass (funny, huh?) for you to see. I doubt that I was the first mooning victim, and I'm sure that I won't be the last.
Favorite road
Thomasville Rd.. Thomasville Road is a weird little stretch of tarmac. It takes you all the way from the heart of ol' nasty Tallahassee, on to Killearn, where the rich, the debt-ridden, and the entitled youth live. Traffic sucks until you exit the big city. It's mostly traffic caused by those exiting I-10 in order to bring their kids (university students) care packages. Some of the traffic is headed to the local eateries. Others to chain restaurants like Panera (Which is NOT as wholesome and fresh as they make it sound. Next time you get a bowl of broccoli cheddar soup with your Roasted Turkey and Avocado BLT, just remember that the soup has been sitting in the freezer, as a solid block of soup in a bag, for at least three weeks). My absolute favorite part of this road is where it takes you once you leave greater Tallahassee. I know I've sounded bitter up until this point, but rest assured, that's over. Thomasville Road takes you through a nice sprawl of farms and fields, and not many others around. My favorite part is the oh-so picturesque Bradley's Country Store. This place really makes you feel like you're in the kindhearted and slow moving south. They have some killer sausage, and it's probably your best bet to find both RC Cola and a Moon Pie in close proximity to one another. If you keep following the dusty blacktop, you land in... You guessed it, Thomasville, GA. It's a great day trip, I definitely recommend it.

Tallahassee, FL Driving Tips
Always leave at least 30 minutes before you have to be anywhere. Even if a map says that you are only 10 miles away, give yourself thirty minutes. And that's not during rush hour or lunch hours. At those times, you need to allow yourself at least an hour. Tallahassee is very, very small, but it has a LOT of people who seem to always be on the road. Plus, there are traffic lights after traffic lights, all timed against each other. You will stop at all of them. And it will be less than a mile in-between stops. Also, many roads are 30-40 mph, which also keeps traffic slow. So the very best tip, leave early!
Tallahassee, FL Buying Tips
Honestly, the dealerships are rather spread out in this town. There are a good number of used dealerships on the South East side of town, on Tennessee street. If you know a particular kind of car you are looking for, then it is best to find out where that dealership is and go there. If you are looking for a used car, I often use Google and see what comes up in my area. I also have a favorite used dealership where a have bought a couple of my cars now. It's called the Used Car Supermarket. The guys are really friendly, really easy, and work with you. Best car buying experience I've ever had.
Favorite driving memory
My favorite memory would probably be the day my husband and I "discovered" the neighborhood we currently live in. We spent most of our time downtown near and on campus, so on the weekends, we would like to explore. One weekend we decided to drive out Thomasville Road NE and kept going past the highway, almost in to Georgia. That's when we found Killearn Lakes Plantation. It blew us away. The whole neighborhood was tucked back in a forest of trees. It felt like you had wandered into a beautiful park, and decided to build a home there. We drove up and down and around the neighborhood for hours and vowed that this was where we were going to live one day... And now we do.
Favorite road
Thomasville Road. There are many beautiful, winding, canopy roads in Tallahassee... But I really don't enjoy driving down them. They are narrow, they have a lot of blind corners, and everyone seems to be in way too big of a hurry down them. Instead, I enjoy Thomasville Road. It is a two directional highway, and it is three lanes on each side, with a bike path and side walks down most of it. There are also turn lanes to merge onto and move out of the way of the rest of traffic. It flows nicely, it is easy to drive, and I can get to all of my favorite places while driving down it.
