2001 Ford Taurus - A Comfy Choice
I've had this car for about 4 years now and think it's great. I inherited it from my grandma after she passed, and she hardly drove it. So even though it's 15 years old, it's got relatively low mileage on it. It's very spacious and roomy, and has had very few mechanical issues.
Historia
I was able to drive this car from one end of the country to the other and back with zero issues. That trip wouldn't have been possible without the Taurus.
A Favor
It's had very few mechanical issues considering it's 15 years old, which has been financially beneficial. It is also very spacious inside which bodes well for my 6'2" frame.
En Contra
The biggest issue that I have with this car is that it has a horrible turning radius. It often takes several points to make a turn that other cars could do in one.
1993 Ford Taurus - Great vehicle, even when it's old!
These cars can mechanically last forever it seems. I bought mine used with 160,000 miles on it, and it still drives relatively well. The 3.0L engines are extremely reliable and can just keep chugging along! It produces enough base power to give a satisfactory driving experience, while also having decent fuel economy. Great commuting car.
Historia
A few friends and I decided to go hiking in Washington State. We read a trip review for the trail, which had mentioned that "he liked having an SUV to ford the water". I was initially concerned about how big this water might be. Upon encountering a couple of inches deep worth of water, I concluded that this would be no problem, remembering that they rent these to drive around in rural Alaska!
A Favor
These engines last forever. Just keep the basic maintenance up. I was surprised how nicely it drove after getting a tune up (replace sparkplugs and cleaning fuel filter -- this hadn't been done for at least 100k miles based on previous owner's service records.
Pretty good fuel economy, decent driving experience.
For quite a number of years, Arctic Outfitters in Fairbanks, AK rented Ford Tauruses to drive the notably difficult James Dalton Highway towards the arctic ocean. I think that may say more about the reliability of the vehicle than almost anything I can say!
