Purchased in 2009 with over 125,000 miles on it - the Mercury Mountaineer has enabled me to set up camp off-road, take friends with me, tow trailers for moving and camp meets, and so much more. It's structural build of a truck on a car chassis seems odd; but, with the four wheel drive and engine - it can easily navigate off roads while simultaneously being able to turn on a dime. The cost of gas for this vehicle is astronomical. 17 To 22 mpg is no way to live and this vehicle is one that while family and camping friendly, should be saved for camping trips and moving only. It can however be put through it's paces with minimal damage, so the question is if what it does offer offset the cost of gas and upkeep in the long run.
