I have owned this '07 Prius since 2010, and would buy it again. It is not a perfect car, but it has been a great car for the price. It just passed 150,000 miles and has needed zero service. If you are looking for just a regular cheap economy car with low operating cost, it's hard to beat a hybrid.
Historia
The only real memorable story is driving 2,600 miles (each way) last summer for a family member's birthday. Great road trip across the country, and a comfy cruiser for the family. Got stuck in the sand on the coast of Washington though, but made it up to see Mt St Helen's just fine.
A Favor
Outstanding gas mileage. Real-world lifetime average for me is 51.2 Mpg. Quick ratio steering. Makes for easy parking and not tiring on long drives. Outward visibility is excellent. There is a ton of storage areas inside the cabin. The hatchback style trunk offers a huge area to haul stuff. Regenerative braking means you don't hardly ever have to touch the brakes. Mine are the factory pads, at 150k miles, and it still stops just fine. Surprisingly, there are a good number of performance upgrades out there for this car. Only important to gearheads, but still, it's nice to know you have opti... (more)
En Contra
It's slow. Not dreadfully slow, but about the same as a 20 year old Camry or full size truck. It's electric and gas motors together are about 140 horsepower, so it can get to highway speed just fine, but you won't ever win a drag race. High speed handling isn't great. Lots of body roll on high speed corners, like exit ramps. This can be fixed with suspension upgrades, but... Ugly. I've gotten used to the looks, but still think it's funky at best. Fortunately I don't have to look at it while driving, and the interior isn't bad at all. My wife thinks the seats aren't all that comfy. I like... (more)

The second generation (2004 to 2009) Toyota Prius is well known for its distinctive aerodynamic shape, and for being the best selling hybrid in North America. Personally, I think it's ugly, but I don't have to look at it as I'm driving it. The car has been reliable since purchased at 2 years old, and has racked up 163,000 miles, mostly trouble-free. The small 12v battery had to be replaced at 160k, and the blower motor for the A/C went out around 80k. They are both cheap online and easy to replace, so I've spent all of about $220 on repairs the last 7 years. The interior is a somewhat odd layout, and rather loud on the highway. On the other hand, it does fit this 6'3" guy just fine and gets just shy of 50 mpg. If you can deal with driving an ugly car, the second gen Prius is an exce... (more)

I took it to the local drag strip. Yup, it's slow.
A Favor
Averaged 49 mpg when new, now down to 47 mpg with high miles. Super reliable. Sharp steering. Excellent exterior visibility. Would make a great first car. Cheap insurance. The hatch can hold a surprising amount of groceries. I've even put an assembled tool chest back there, and another time a full size (6ft) easel. Interior storage space is great.
En Contra
It looks pretty gross. This isn't a Stingray. It's slow. Not horribly slow - about the same as a late '90s V6 F-Series truck - and takes a bit of getting used to. Interior ergonomics are a bit weird. Road noise is a bit high for the class. It's all tire drone. Quiet around town, though. Sloppy high speed handling. This car needs better springs and sway bars to better match American highways. That can be arranged for about $500, but it should have been better from the factory.

It wasn't the best, but they had the car I wanted for the right price. Might not go back, they're high pressure.
