I used to have a Volvo so my main concern was safety. The Cherokee’s safety scores are below average for the class. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the 2017 Cherokee earns four out of five stars for its overall rating, its frontal crash and rollover tests. In its side crash test, it scores five stars.
Story
So far, just driving it off the lot and taking my jet skis has been an extremely enjoyable and fun experience.
Pros
I like to take my jet ski and boat out on weekends. When equipped with the base engine, the Cherokee can tow up to 2,000 pounds. That capacity increases to 4,500 pounds with the V6 engine. While all Cherokee models come with standard trailer sway control, those towing numbers mean the Cherokee is not a serious tow vehicle. With the V6, you should be able to handle towing a small trailer with two snowmobiles or jet skis. With the four-cylinder engine, your towing options are more limited.
Cons
One of my least favorite features about my Cherokee is the gas mileage. Usually when you choose a small SUV with a four-cylinder engine, what you trade in power, you make back in fuel economy. That’s not the case with the Cherokee. Even with the base engine, fuel economy is lackluster: 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway with front-wheel drive. In comparison, the Honda CR-V returns an EPA-estimated 26 mpg in the city and 32 on the highway while making the same 184 horsepower.

We bought our Jeep Cherokee used and had 15 years of fun in it. We took it camping and it handled all the bumps in the country roads. An impressive feature was the Jeep was almost soundproof inside with the windows rolled up. We bought it when it was two years old and it was still like new when we sold it to a family member who is still driving it to this day! The only downsides to the Jeep would be the Injector O rings had to be replaced twice during the time we had it. If you know how to work on vehicles, then this would be no big deal for you. The second problem was the filter in the fuel tank, literally broke on us when we were driving in the bumpy country roads one afternoon, suddenly the jeep was dead on the road, had it towed and easily found the problem and fixed it. The third ... (more)
Story
We lost our luggage that we put on top of the Jeep! We forgot to strap it down and it rode on top for about three miles before one suitcase went flying in the air, nothing was damaged too bad!
Pros
We loved the luggage rack on top and it was adjustable. Loved the quiet ride. Very roomy interior, spacious leg room for all passengers, bucket seats.
Cons
Going through a scary fuel throttle recall. Cost of tires, they are expensive.
