Overall, this is a very solid car that is really safe. It had side airbags, and it is difficult to rollover when cornering. It is able to take turns really well and does not handle like an SUV. It is very off-road capable and can drive on ice without losing control. It can also be used to tow small loads. A large negative is the unreliable parts and the difficulty of working in it. Previous generation were easier to work on and had less problems. It's also a Subaru, so you will have to replace the head gaskets after about 100k miles.
Story
Driving on ice is rare here. Some cars were struggling, but mine was able to drive in it no problem and not lose control.
Pros
This car is great in that it has an excellent turning radius for its size and had great off-road capabilities. It can hold a lot of cargo, and it is not afraid to go over bumps. It handles pot holes well, and the suspension is really solid.
Cons
A big detriment is Subaru moving away from using a lot of deinso parts and branching out to Chevy, Nissan, and cheap parts. All the parts I've replaced that failed were from these cheap manufactures. It is also not as easy to work on as previous generation and had some of quirks when doing repairs yourself. If you drop a screw, it can get stuck above the catalytic converter and be difficult to retrieve.

I like how quick and peppy the CVT transmission is, especially compared to normal automatic transmissions. The windows being so large lessens blind spots. The turn radius makes parking lots and U-turns easy. The styling on the car isn't trying too hard, and the interior is clean and easy to use. The vehicle height makes ramping curbs easy when necessary. The seating is very comfortable for the front and back seats. The all-wheel drive system makes driving in adverse weather, i.e., heavy rain and ice, extremely easy. I have also taken this through rocky terrain with no problems.
Story
One night I was making a trip into the country when a huge storm blew in. The rain and wind were so bad that many cars were having to stop on the shoulder. This was not long after I had gotten the car, and I was amazed at how well it was able to keep to the road with no hydroplaning.
Pros
I love how large the sun roof is and that it can open all the way. The cabin has a very open and airy feeling to it. The headlights are bright and at a level where you can see easily at night. The amount of airbags and safety features makes me feel comfortable driving my dogs around in it.
Cons
There are no air vents in the back seat. The Bluetooth does not work with newer phones. The heated seats don't get very hot.

I purchased this car back in 2007 or so, and the purchasing process was fantastic - the staff was very knowledgeable and friendly, letting me look at the various cars available before I settled on the Subaru Baja. They also let me take the car for a test drive, which they had no issues with. After a quick drive, we went back to decide what features I needed and closed the deal.
