Overall, this is a very solid car that is really safe. It had side airbags, and it is difficult to rollover when cornering. It is able to take turns really well and does not handle like an SUV. It is very off-road capable and can drive on ice without losing control. It can also be used to tow small loads. A large negative is the unreliable parts and the difficulty of working in it. Previous generation were easier to work on and had less problems. It's also a Subaru, so you will have to replace the head gaskets after about 100k miles.
Story
Driving on ice is rare here. Some cars were struggling, but mine was able to drive in it no problem and not lose control.
Pros
This car is great in that it has an excellent turning radius for its size and had great off-road capabilities. It can hold a lot of cargo, and it is not afraid to go over bumps. It handles pot holes well, and the suspension is really solid.
Cons
A big detriment is Subaru moving away from using a lot of deinso parts and branching out to Chevy, Nissan, and cheap parts. All the parts I've replaced that failed were from these cheap manufactures. It is also not as easy to work on as previous generation and had some of quirks when doing repairs yourself. If you drop a screw, it can get stuck above the catalytic converter and be difficult to retrieve.

My 2014 Subaru Forester is just what I wanted in transportation. I can carry lots of gear and feel safe and comfortable doing so. With the easy folding back seats, I have been able to carry all sorts of stuff in the car. The styling is nice, overall the car is really good looking. The interior styling and accessories are the best of any car I have owned. It handles well, and its continuous all wheel drive is great. I love the safety rating. I get the feeling that I am more in control driving this Subaru than I had in previous Hondas, Toyotas, and even a BMW.
Story
My first trip with two others in the car was from North Texas to Quebec City and back. The car was perfect for this trip. It even hauled us up Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. Also, I was able to fit a full-size dryer into the cargo area, which surprised the salesman.
Pros
Its comfort during long trips is outstanding, and the handling in adverse conditions is really better than 2wd vehicles. With the price of gas, the excellent mileage both on the road and in town is a real plus. I get 31 mpg highway and 27 mpg in town. This is much better than the Honda Element I had before. The cargo area and tray in the back are also really good.
Cons
The only con is the CVT takes some getting used to. The way the car accelerates is very different because of this transmission. After a while, I stopped noticing this.

I purchased this car back in 2007 or so, and the purchasing process was fantastic - the staff was very knowledgeable and friendly, letting me look at the various cars available before I settled on the Subaru Baja. They also let me take the car for a test drive, which they had no issues with. After a quick drive, we went back to decide what features I needed and closed the deal.
