2011 Toyota Prius - The Toyota Prius - great mileage, fun car, rough braking

Overall, the Prius has been fun to drive, especially on family trips. It gets great mileage and handles hills better than I'd expected, even lots of hills like driving through Oregon's coast range. It averages around 45 miles per gallon, though I expect it would have better mileage if we drove it more in heavy traffic. The power mode feature is useful for handling hills or needing to accelerate to get onto the freeway, and the eco mode is useful for driving in heavy stop and go traffic. It holds a lot more than we'd expected, especially with the seats folded down. The one downside is that the braking feels very rough and sudden. I suspect that it's because of the mechanism that uses the brakes to power the battery. Applying what would be normal pressure to the breaks on another vehicle... (more)
Story
Our family's first trip with the Prius. We took it on a hundred-plus mile drive to the Oregon coast this winter. It performed very well, even driving through the coast range through some small amounts of snow.
Pros
Great mileage. Optional power mode for going up hills or rapid acceleration. Pretty good storage space for a small car. Handles well, with a tight turning radius. No mechanical/performance issues. Adaptor hooks up iPod directly to speakers. Can turn it off and on with a button.
Cons
Very rough braking - you have to be very careful about how much pressure to apply when breaking so you don't jolt the passengers. Gas mileage not quite as good as the 50 mpg that's often advertised for a Prius. The beeping sound it makes when backing up that I haven't figured out how to turn off is seriously annoying. Sits very low to the ground, which can be challenging on steep hills or roads with a lot of pot holes.

We bought this as a "third" vehicle and it has become the primary. Living 30 miles out of town, it is such a commuter. It beats our Passat hands down. At 220K miles it is still going strong. We have had only minor maintenance and getting the work done by the dealership is surprisingly reasonable. In every possible way imaginable this car has been completely worth every penny we paid for it and then some. It is safe to boot, and can easily fit three carseats or three average build people in the back seat. We have taken this car places no one would ever imagine a Prius could go (think off grid communities in the back woods of Montana... literally). It is a trooper. We have three vehicles and it is a well spoken fact that when one of the other two gives out it will be replaced with anothe... (more)
Story
We were moving to Washington and somehow missed a sign for a "seasonal" road... we got stuck for the first and last time ever in this car. Called AAA and their person would not even come out on this road because it was so murky. Once night hit and the mud froze over, though, we got out just fine... but it was funny seeing the tow truck dude and the dispatcher in his SUV scared to go down a roa... (more)
Pros
Awesome mileage, smooth ride, safe and family friendly, reliable, holds its value over time, so much more.
Cons
This is a challenge- Okay, the stock stereo leaves something to be desired... Again, we live out of town. The signal on the radio is spotty in the hills. Also wish the ground clearance were a little more. We have taken this car out in the mountains and it has generally done great... but every so often in the spring there is a road with a bit too deep of cracks from the spring thaw... if they could keep everything else about this car but lift it to give like 8" clearance they would have made a midas car...

This dealership was where my girlfriend got her most recent vehicle. The employees were great and helped satisfy all of our needs in terms of finding a new car. They have a knowledge of cars that is superior to most dealerships in the area and are much more willing to work with you on payments than any other dealership.

The staff was very professional and helpful. I did not feel pressured or rushed into a decision. I did not feel like they were using any shady tactics for the financing or pricing. Overall it was a great experience and I continue to take the car to them for maintenance.
