I loved my 99 Jetta. I was the second owner, likely after an expired lease. I purchased it from the dealer. The car did require new wheel work, related to the velocity joint, but thankfully that was covered by the warrantee. My particular model did not have power windows and was unfortunately in black. Having lived in the south, a black car was did get hot. I used and abused this poor vehicle and it held up nicely through the abuse. Jetta's are not meant for taking out on forested dirt tracks and this car was a trooper. I did have to replace the oil pan three times and the wind shield at least twice. Certainly not the intended use for this type of low clearance vehicle and I would not subject a Volkswagen to such abuse again. I did find that the smallest rock chip on the edge of the wi... (more)
Story
I was going on a short backpacking trip and took the car deep into the woods to find the trail head. Unfortunately we encountered a large rock in the middle of the road and ripped the oil pan really good. Needless to say we had to have the car towed out from the middle of nowhere. It was still a great trip and I have many fond memories from it.
Pros
I was consistently able to get at least 33 miles per gallon on the highway, sometimes even a little more depending on conditions. The low clearance made it easy for me to install the roof rack and tie down boats. The interior was well thought out and it was easy to find features, like the clock or radio dial at a glance.
Cons
I did not get power windows with my vehicle and I missed having them. The oil loss, while not huge, was something I had to always be on top of. When wear and tear started to wear out parts, I found they were not cheap to fix. And winters were very hard on the undercarriage, rust had built up around the brakes and pads that I needed new rotors, again not a cheap repair. And one repair technician was not careful and broke the brake line holding up what was supposed to be a quick repair while I waited for the custom line to be ordered.

This is a car that took a licking and kept on ticking. I got into a couple minor accidents with my car and although there was some superficial damage, the rest of the car held up great. It was a great size, both easy for parallel parking in a busy city and loading it up with lots of stuff to move and take road trips. I liked the way it looked and it wasn't too flashy. It was practical, reliable, comfortable, and decent fuel economy.
Story
I enjoyed taking trips in my car in the summer. Luggage in the trunk. Best-friend in the passenger seat and dog in the back. We could easily parallel park and still hold enough in the trunk to take long trips.
Pros
--I thought it was a great looking car, but it wasn't so flashy that it got stolen (which had happened to me with a previous car and to my friends car when we were parked next to each other the same night). --I had gotten into a few "fender-benders" and d
Cons
--The rims or The tires and The black trim around The car kept falling off. --The cup holders were too small to hold anything but a small aluminum can, which was annoying when buying a bigger bottle of soda or a large coffee from anywhere. --My car got br
