C4 Corvette - The Complete Reference, Facts, and History

The Corvette C4 is the fourth generation of the iconic sports car from Chevrolet, produced from 1984 to 1996. The car was designed by Dave McLellan, who had replaced Zora Arkus-Duntov as Chevrolet's chief designer in 1975.

The C4 marked an important new stage in the evolution of the Corvette; it had a different chassis than the C3, and its body panels and bumpers were made of molding plastics instead of fiberglass. It also had a more streamlined style and it reintroduced the convertible after an 11-year hiatus.

The Corvette C4 was a major step toward the look and feel of modern models.

Departing From the Stingray Design

The Corvette C3 that the C4 replaced was based on the Mako Shark II concept car, itself inspired by the sleek body and long snout of the shortfin mako shark. It featured a highly stylized design with a sporty, swooping front and "sugar scoop" roof treatment.

By contrast, the C4 had tighter, more understated proportions and downplayed its sports car lineage. In departing from the classic "Stingray" design of Vettes from the 1960s, the C4 embraced a more futuristic sensibility.

Unlike the body-on-frame construction of earlier Corvettes, the C4 was built with a uniframe. Not to be confused with a unibody assembly, in which the exterior body panels are structural members, the uniframe combines critical elements of the car, such as the windshield frame, into one welded unit.

The C4 also replaced the coil springs in the C3's front suspension with a much lighter transverse fiberglass mono-leaf spring. Finally, instead of the T-tops of its predecessors, the C4 features targa tops.

The Release of the C4 Corvette

From 1963 until 1984, the year in which the C4 came out, the Corvette's design had remained largely unchanged. The C3 had even inherited the same chassis and suspension design as its predecessor.

Despite a year-long delay due to quality issues, the C4's overhaul of the Corvette was a financial success, with sales figures for this line of cars doubling after the C4's release. A total of 51,547 C4 Vettes were sold in 1984 for around $21,800 each.

Buyers appreciated the car's modern amenities, such as the instrument cluster with a digital LCD and the 16-inch 50-series Goodyear Gatorback tires.

The 1984 model also featured the small-block L83 V8 engine from the 1982 Corvette, which includes the short-lived throttle-body Cross-Fire fuel injection. It put out 205 horsepower and 290 foot-pounds of torque.

Due to a lack of support for the fuel injection, some modern car collectors are critical of the 1984 Corvette. However, 1984 C4s are some of the most affordable collectibles on the market, with some well-maintained units selling for as low as $6,000, as of 2019.

The Evolution of the C4: 1985 to 1986

The second half of the 1980s saw a steady refinement of the C4, especially when it came to the vehicle's power. In 1985, the controversial L83 V8 engine was replaced with a more powerful and fuel-efficient L98 featuring the tuned-point fuel injection found in Camaros and Firebirds. This engine was capable of 230 horsepower and 330 foot-pounds of torque, and the car's top speed is 150 mph.

At the time, this speed was matched only by Buick Grand Nationals and modified Ford Mustangs. The suspension for the 1985 C4 was also softened by 25 percent. Chevrolet sold 39,729 units for an average of $24,891 each.

1986 saw one of the Corvette C4's biggest shifts. For the first time in 11 years, Chevrolet sold a Corvette convertible in addition to the standard Corvette coupe model. Based on the yellow C4 convertible pace car used in the 1986 Indy 500, the Corvette convertible sold for an extra $6,000 and featured an Indy 500 pace car plaque.

This was also the year in which Chevrolet introduced the Pass Key I passive anti-theft system. This system only unlocked the car doors if it detected one of 15 electrical resistance values produced by a special pellet in the car keys. However, car thieves quickly learned how to bypass the system.

The 1986 Corvette also introduced antilock brakes, electronic climate control and a third brake light. In 1986, a total of 35,109 C4s were sold: 7,315 convertibles and 27,794 coupes. The price for a C4 coupe was $27,027.

The Evolution of the C4: 1987 to 1989

In 1987, the Corvette C4's engine gained roller hydraulic lifters to boost its horsepower to 240. Customers who wanted to supercharge their engine could buy the $19,999 B2K twin-turbo engine conversion, supplied by Callaway Cars in partnership with Chevrolet, to increase the engine's horsepower to 345 and its torque to 465 foot-pounds. The result was one of the fastest cars of its time.

A specially modified C4 known as the Callaway SledgeHammer reached a top speed of 254 mph. C4 Vettes with twin-turbo engines are collector cars, as only about 500 exist.

In 1987, 30,632 C4s were sold.

The 1988 model year saw the release of the 35th Anniversary Edition Corvette, also known as the Triple White Corvette. This car is all-white, including its wheels and interior, and features a special engine and removable black top. Of the 2,050 Anniversary Edition Corvettes produced, only 180 have manual transmissions.

C4s also underwent suspension changes and a new wheel design in 1988. The emergency brake was also moved toward the rear of the car for easier entering and exiting. In 1988, 22,789 C4s were sold. 1988 was the last year the Doug Nash 4+3 transmission was available. This transmission combined a four-speed manual with an automatic overdrive on three gears. The ZF six-speed manual replaced the 4+3 in 1989. Although the ZF featured no improvements in power or efficiency, it was more expensive. In 1989, 26,412 C4s were sold at a base price of $32,045.

The Evolution of the C4: 1990 to 1993

With the help of Group Lotus, a UK-based engineering consultant, Chevrolet sought to produce the fastest production car in the world.

The result was the ZR1, a Chevrolet Corvette C4 option package released in 1990, which broke the record for the 24-hour, 5,000-mile land speed, achieving speeds of 175 mph.

The C4 ZR1 cost $58,995, making it by far the most expensive Corvette up to that point. However, the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 sold well. Over 3,000 people bought it in the first year, and some paid over $100,000 for it.

The regular C4 also saw refinements in 1990: a drivers-side airbag and an optional 200-watt six-speaker sound system. In all, 23,646 C4s were sold in 1990.

1991 saw minor tweaks. The cost for a C4 rose to $33,005, and the exterior had some restyling. 20,639 C4s were sold.

1992 saw much larger changes. Most notably, the LT1 V8 replaced the L98, delivering 300 horsepower and 330 foot-pounds of torque, plus the short-lived optically triggered Optispark ignition system. 1992 also witnessed the one-millionth Corvette ever made. The price for a standard C4 rose to $33,635, and 20,479 of the cars were sold.

In 1993, Lotus helped Chevrolet modify the C4's valvetrain, exhaust system and aluminum cylinder heads to improve power and torque. Passive keyless entry was added to all models as well, and an exhaust re-circulation system was introduced to make controlling emissions easier. This model year also saw the release of the 40th Anniversary C4, featuring ruby metallic paint and ruby leather seats. At a base price of $34,595, a total of 21,590 C4s were sold in 1993.

The Evolution of the C4: 1994 to 1996

1994 didn't see many changes. The base price rose to $36,185, a passenger airbag was added, and the LT1 engine received a mass airflow sequential fuel injection. In all, 23,330 Chevrolet Corvette C4s were sold.

1995 was similarly uneventful. It saw a second-generation Optispark ignition system and some exterior restyling. The car cost $36,785, and 20,742 were sold.

1996, however, was an important year for the Chevrolet Corvette C4, as it was the vehicle's last year of production. An optional LT4 engine was produced, delivering 330 horsepower. Plus, an optional real-time damping system was available, which monitored the road to reduce vibrations.

The 1996 C4 also debuted Chevrolet's OBD II onboard diagnostics system. In addition, Chevrolet released the Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport to celebrate the end of this generation of Corvettes. Inspired by the Grand Sport of 1963, this Grand Sport came exclusively in Admiral Blue with a white stripe and featured black wheels and bold red hash marks on the driver's side wheel arch. Only 1,000 Grand Sports were made: 190 convertibles and 810 coupes.

1996 also saw the release of a Collector's Edition Corvette, featuring silver wheels and a Sebring Silver paint job. 5,412 of these cars were built: 1,381 convertibles and 4,031 coupes. In all, 21,536 C4s were sold in 1996 at a base price of $37,225.

With its streamlined design and a slew of new features, the Chevrolet Corvette C4 was a bold leap into modernity. The C5, released in 1997, continued the trend, opting for a hydroformed box frame and a rear-mounted transaxle assembly. Today, the C4 is perhaps best known for its spate of offshoots and variations, many of which have become collectibles.

The C3 Corvette, built between 1968 and 1982, was the third generation of Chevrolet’s venerable Corvette sports car. Occasionally seen as polarizing, the C3 garnered both praise and criticism for its radical design, purpose and driving dynamics.

Expectations were huge when the model launched. Zora Arkus-Duntov and Billy Mitchell, the second generation C2 Corvette designers, had just built the hugely successful, powerful, and respected Sting Ray Corvette. Even today, the Sting Ray is widely regarded as one of the best Corvette models ever made.

The pressure to build an appropriate C2 successor did not only come from the expectations set by the previous generation, though. The mid- to late- 1960’s saw the rise of the muscle car. Competitors like Pontiac, Buick, and even Chevy themselves were developing powerful and inexpensive cars with stellar straight-line performance.

If the Corvette was to keep up, it had to distinguish itself somehow other than with pure acceleration, a fact that Duntov and Mitchell knew all too well.

The Beginnings of the C3 Corvette

C3 development started at the C2’s mid-cycle refresh. Frank Winchell, Chevrolet’s engineering director, Duntov, and Mitchell all set out to produce their idea of what the C3 should be.

All three agreed that the front engine layout should be scrapped, and they planned their designs accordingly.

Winchell based his concept on a rear-engine design with styling cues taken from the Porsche 911 and current Chevrolet Corvair.

Duntov and Mitchell based their mid-engine design on the Mako Shark concept. Styling elements included a pointed nose, steeply raked roofline, and a flat, duck-tail rear-end design, all of which made their concept look aggressive and futuristic.

Despite the desire to create a mid-engined Corvette, budgetary constraints, the lack of appropriate mid or rear-engine parts compatibility, and weight distribution issues prevented the C3 from truly being what its designers envisioned.

The front-engine layout along with the chassis and independent rear suspension would both be carried over from the previous C2 Corvette. To accommodate this, the C3 concept would have to be re-worked from its initial mid-engine compatible design to a more conventional design.

Billy Mitchell hired new designer Larry Shinoda to take on the task. The resulting concept would be the Mako Shark II, a design that could have taken on the mid-engine layout if anything were to progress toward that end.

In 1965, a non-functioning concept was built and shown to the public to garner excitement, followed by a fully functional version. After a short hiatus, a more reasonably designed second run concept was introduced which provided a more realistic image of the soon-to-be C3 Vette.

The “shark generation” Chevy Corvette was about to launch, but not before production was delayed one year from its original 1967 target release due to numerous design issues.

The Early Years: 1968-1969

The C3 debuted for the 1968 model year. It closely resembled the second-run Mako II concept car shown to the public in 1965. It became known as the “Coke bottle” design for its sharp front end, upward-angled front fenders, slim midsection, and large swept rear fenders.

Production models were essentially a marriage between the previous generation Corvette and the Mako II concept model. It was not as sharp and aggressively styled as the Mako II, but the chassis, suspension, and even some engine options remained the same.

Naturally, it was produced with a fiberglass body.

The two-speed Powerglide transmission from the previous generation was replaced by the three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. A three-speed or four-speed manual transmission was also offered.

The C3 came as a coupe or convertible. Corvette convertibles could be had with a removable hardtop while Corvette T-top coupes had removable roof panels and rear window. A “sugar scoop” design replaced the originally proposed fastback design, creating a vertical rear window with buttresses sloping from the roof to the rear on either side.

There were plenty of engine choices. 327-cubic-inch small block engine power options included the standard 300-horsepower and L79 350-horsepower variants. 427-cubic-inch big-block engine offerings included the L36 390-, L68 400-, L88 430-, and L71 435-horsepower options.

The prized L88 big-block engines were fitted with two-barrel Holley carburetors and Muncie manual transmissions. For fitment and inadvertent styling points, C3s equipped with big-block engines received a sizeable elevated hood bulge to accommodate the larger engine size over the small-block versions.

Notable features included windshield wipers hidden under a vacuum-operated panel, concealed exterior door handles, vacuum-operated pop-up headlights, functional fender vents for engine cooling, a rear defroster, an AM/FM radio, air conditioning, disc brakes, leather seats, and a speed warning indicator.

Minimal upgrades to the 1969 C3s included an optional trunk rack, smaller steering wheel, a stiffer frame, wider wheels, optional side pipe exit exhaust, and the iconic Corvette Stingray name, designated by a chrome fender plate.

Small-block engines were upgraded to 350 cubic inches for 1969, producing greater compression ratios.

As with many new vehicle redesigns, the first year of the C3 Corvette was met with criticism from the media. Build quality, styling, and other things were critiqued harshly. But by the second year, GM had worked out many of these issues.

Enthusiasts had embraced the new C3, and sales numbers were proving it.

Growing Up: 1970-1972

The 1970 to 1972 C3s continued to see small developments which ultimately made the ‘Vette a better vehicle, though build quality was reportedly still a major concern. By 1972, it was clear that change was on the horizon.

Minor exterior changes in 1970 included a revised egg-crate style grille and side fender vents, deeper fenders, rectangular exhaust cutouts, and side marker lights.

Interior changes were also minor but attempted to create a more inviting atmosphere for the passengers. Increased headroom, wood-grain trim, and door to door carpeting.

A new engine option was introduced in 1970. The small-block LT-1 featured a Holley four-barrel carburetor and produced 370 horsepower. All the other small-block engine options from 1969 remained the same while both the big-block engines – the LS5, producing 390 horsepower, and LS7, producing 460 horsepower – increased from 427 cubic inches to 454 cubic inches.

1971 saw stricter emissions regulations and started the trend of weakening engine outputs. The LT-1 notably dropped from a reported 370 horsepower to 330 horsepower while the LS5 saw its horsepower rating fall to 365. Another new 454 cubic inch engine, the LS6, was offered for 1971 which produced 425 horsepower. It replaced the canceled LS7 engine from the previous year.

The ZR1 and ZR2 racing packages were available to the public. The ZR1 featured the LT-1 small-block engine and the ZR2 was paired with the LS6. Both included an upgraded suspension, upgraded radiator, and a special close-ratio four-speed transmission.

Emissions further choked the engine options for 1972. The ZR2 package was no longer offered because the LS6 was discontinued. The base ZQ-3 engine only produced 200 horsepower while the LT-1 was downgraded to 255 horsepower, and the LS5 produced 270 horsepower.

The three-speed manual transmission was also dropped in favor of a standard four-speed manual for the 1972 model year.

1972 went out with a bang and signaled changing times for the C3 Corvette in the coming years.

Major Changes: 1973-1974

The 1973 C3 came with some significant changes. It would be the 20th anniversary of the Corvette and mid-cycle refresh was in order.

Though the front-end design had not changed, the iconic pointy chrome nose and grille were replaced by safer urethane bumpers. The egg-crate fender vents were replaced with a single vent cutout. The vacuum-operated windshield wiper panel was gone and the hood was extended to obscure the wipers. The removable rear window was now fixed in place.

1973 was the only year in which a chrome bumper was affixed to only the rear of the Corvette.

1974 saw a full change to impact bumpers on the front and back of the car. Rear bumpers were angled downward as opposed to the upward-pointing trunk lid which had always housed the round iconic Corvette taillights. Fender flairs extended out to give the profile a more aggressive look.

An upgraded radiator, automatic transmission, and power steering pump were all fitted for 1974 models.

Radial tires, steel door beams, lap and shoulder belts, and safety bumpers were equipped to meet increasing federal safety standards. Cabin noise deadening was added to provide better comfort while traveling, a move that further solidified its place as a developing grand tourer rather than a hard-core sports car with muscle.

Emissions regulations continued to erode this mentality in 1974.

The base small-block L46 V8 engine coughed out 190 horsepower. The L82 small-block managed slightly better with 250 horsepower while the lone big-block option, the LS4, pumped out 270 horsepower.

For further performance enhancement, the Gymkhana Suspension Package increased handling.

Even though the big-block engine outputs of the late ’60s made the ’73 and ’74 offerings look tame at best, the emissions regulations and OPEC oil embargo affected everyone. The Corvette still offered an increasingly luxurious driving experience with a good amount of comparable performance. Despite itself and its struggles, sales numbers were stronger than ever.

The Transitional Years: 1975-1977

1975 marked the beginning of the true transitional years for the third-generation Corvette C3.

It was the first Corvette to have a catalytic converter fitted to the car, the first year a true dual exhaust setup was not equipped, and the first year a big-block engine option was not offered. 1975 was the last year that the convertible models were produced for this generation.

More importantly, Zora Arkus-Duntov officially retired from GM, and Dave McLellan took over the reins.

Even though the C3 would be a decade old after the 1977 model year and major regulatory changes had all but neutered the iconic sports car, 1975-1977 saw over 130,000 units sold, with 1977 seeing the 500,000th Corvette roll off the assembly line.

The front and rear bumper designs were slightly altered from the previous 1974 ‘Vette to decrease accident damage, and two pads on either side of the bumpers were added for additional bumper support.

Only two engine choices were available: the ZQ3 350 cubic inch small-block which produced 165 horsepower and the L82 small-block which produced 205 horsepower. 1976 and ’77 engine offerings remained the same with slightly better outputs. The base engine produced 180 horsepower and the L82 was bumped to 210 horsepower.

A new ignition system, a fuel tank emission control system, and a light-on warning system marked new changes for 1975. For 1976, the cowl induction hood was eliminated, steel floor panels were added, aluminum wheels were added, two rear bumper assemblies were available with different Corvette lettering, power steering, power brakes, and a new steering wheel was offered.

The Stingray badge was removed from the Corvette in 1977 and replaced with the current racing flag emblem present on Corvettes today. The radio, climate controls, and dashboard gauges were all restyled to add functionality and simplicity with leather seating becoming standard.

Despite the increasing cost to buy a Corvette – up to $10,000 for fully-equipped models – sales numbers soared over the previous years.

Rising Again: 1978-1979

The economy was recovering, the oil crisis was over, and the Corvette was returning record high sales numbers. David McLellan had not fully gotten involved with the continuing evolution of the C3 Corvette, but subtle changes continued marching the Corvette forward into 1978 and 1979.

1979 was the Chevrolet Corvette’s 25th anniversary. As such the Silver Anniversary Edition was offered to buyers but was little more than a special silver over gray paint scheme with a pinstripe, special anniversary badging, sport mirrors, and aluminum wheels.

An Indy 500 Pace Car version of the Corvette was also created as part of the celebration and featured the opposite black over silver paint scheme from the Silver Anniversary Edition. Front and rear spoilers, special interior colors, and revised leather seating were part of the Corvette Pace Car.

Regular Corvettes were offered with both anniversary package options with replica paint schemes and features.

All Corvettes in 1978 featured a new fastback design which replaced the “sugar-scoop” rear window and flying buttress design with wrap-around glass. A new instrument gauge cluster, glass T-top panels, wider tires, and a revised anti-theft system were also equipped.

1979 saw standardized air conditioning, AM/FM radio, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, and power windows. Chrome rear window trim was replaced with black trim, tungsten-halogen headlights were added, seat upgrades were added, and the options from anniversary edition ’78 cars were made optional.

The base small-block L48 produced 185 horsepower, and the L82 produced 220, which could be exclusively paired with a close-ratio four-speed manual or an upgraded Hydra-Matic three-speed automatic transmission. 1979 models received small horsepower increases to 195 and 225 horsepower.

Critics praised the 1978 and 1979 Corvettes for their revised styling and good performance for the day, while the special editions were a big hit among consumers. The 1979 Corvette turned out to be the best-selling Corvette of all time despite its first-ever $10,000 price tag to close out the 1970s.

The Final Chapter: 1980-1982

The late ’70’s Corvettes may have been a huge sales success for GM, but the C3 was going on 12 years of production without a major refresh. Because of this, the last piece of the C3 Corvette puzzle was put in place by the final 1982 C3 Collector Edition before the next-generation C4 Corvette would start the next chapter.

Economic woes and another fuel shortage again took their toll on what the Corvette would become in the next few years. One bright spot in Corvette history shined through in 1981 when production moved from St. Louis, Missouri, to Bowling Green, Kentucky, proving instrumental in better build quality that had been lacking in C3 Corvettes for years.

The early ’80’s Corvettes maintained the same general sharp, aggressive look as previous years but with a smoother, more rounded front fascia and grille. Weight loss was a priority, and the use of aluminum and other revised materials throughout the car helped.

The ‘Vette received a federally-mandated 85-mile-per-hour speedometer, the Corvette flag emblem was removed from the fender, and a revised hood was fitted as well.

1980 engine options included the L48, which produced 190 horsepower, and the L82, which produced 230 horsepower. California’s strict emission laws only allowed its residents a 305 cubic inch V8 engine producing 180 horsepower, only available with an automatic transmission.

Starting the next year, a single engine, called the L81, replaced both the L48 and L82 engines. It produced 190 horsepower, 280 lb-ft of torque, and featured stainless steel exhaust manifolds with additional cooling from an electric fan.

Computer Control Command was introduced to help with emissions by controlling ignition timing and the air-fuel mixture within the engine. Additional paint options were also added, including several two-tone paint schemes.

1982 was the last year of the C3. It bridged the gap between the current car and the future C4 by sporting the C4’s future fuel-injected 350-cubic-inch L83 V8 engine. It produced 200 horsepower and 285 lb-ft of torque. Unfortunately, a manual transmission was not available for 1982 models with a four-speed automatic being the only option.

Other 1982 additions included an in-tank electric fuel pump, a redesigned exhaust system, and “Cross Fire Injection” badging.

The Collector Edition Corvette was the perfect farewell to the C3, offering a frameless lifting rear window, Collector Edition emblems, special alloy wheels, a unique silver-beige paint scheme, special exterior-matching interior colors with leather upholstery, and a $20,000 price tag.

Looking Back

The “shark” model C3 Corvette had a huge impact on the automotive industry throughout its fifteen-year tenure. Its futuristic and stylish design was and continues to be one of the most recognizable in American history.

Though it did not change that much from year-to-year, its transformation from 1968 to 1982 is quite evident. Emission standards, economic downturns, and fuel shortages dictated what the Corvette would be from one model year to the next. Despite this, it survived, and it went on to set sales records still unbeaten today.

Its longevity, adaptation to ever-stringent regulations and evolved styling have all made the C3 one of the more popular Corvettes. Some aficionados even believe its performance relative to the models of today make it less desirable than it should be on the collector market.

Values are starting to rise, though, and the C3 is well-known as a good platform with which to work, improve, and ultimately enjoy as a true iconic Corvette.
