dependable, sturdy, fun
I love this car. The look and design are really great! It is a fun car to drive, quick handle, sturdy. For such a big car, it gets great gas mileage. I did have trouble with it starting when there was rain or snow, any type of damp weather. The engine was smooth running. It came with some amazing sound system. The speakers were fantastic. It accelerated extremely well. Before I knew it, I would be going 50 miles per hour. The handling was great on this vehicle as well Great brakes. The interior is beautiful with both leather and fabric. The dash was lovely and even almost 20 years later, no cracks in the dash at all. Few problems the first 10 years, but have had a few in the past couple of years. Ball joints worn, trouble with keeping fluid in radiator (overheating) and trouble with the accelerating device. However, still runs good and a very nice driving and riding vehicle.

Reliable with few faults.
When I purchased the 2001 Mercury Cougar it was in great used condition with about 45,000 miles on it. Over the years of driving the car I haven't experienced many difficulties; the interior has held up well, the framework of the car has never posed any issues. The car handled very well (I drove windy country roads everyday with great ease). The only issues I have had with the car is that the sunroof frame broke about 2 years after purchasing the vehicle after very little use, the alternator and battery posed issues as well having to be replaced multiple times and the ABS brakes became constantly active due to a circuit connection issue.

A Comfortable and Reliable Car
I purchased my 1999 Mercury Cougar Used with 142,000 miles on it. It had been very well cared for by it's previous owner and this is key to having a good experience with a used vehicle. Mercury had a hit with the Cougar's engine design. It is very similar to that used in Ford's higher end vehicles like the Jaguar and is very reliable and long lasting. However with mine being a 1999 model, the first year of it's generation there have been some other small issues to deal with.
Comfort wise - I find driving the cougar to be very nice. The driver's seat has plenty of legroom as does the passenger seat and both are quite comfortable to sit in for long periods of time. The rear seats are smaller bucket seats that might get a little cramped after a while, and there isn't much legroom in the back. However, with this being a two door sporty vehicle, there is very often not very many people riding with you.
Another handy feature of this car is the trunk. With it's hatchback configuration, and folding rear seats it is easy to haul a lot of cargo with this car. The only problem I've seen so far with this is the lowered headroom in the rear seats, you have to be careful closing the hatch with someone sitting back there, but once it's closed you really don't have to worry about bumping your head.
