2004 Mercury Mountaineer - Everything I could need!
This vehicle is large enough to carry me, my daughter, and my service dog along with anyone else who wants to come along. The only thing I wish was that it got better gas mileage. Those trips to Disney are comfortable, but expensive. I have over 100,000 miles on the car and the most money I have spent on it was $300 for a new alternator. Not bad, I believe.

I like this car a lot. My autistic daughter rides horses at a farm. I wait for her to get through with her lesson listening to music and reading while in my car. Sometimes I even nap during her lessons. No problems what so ever. It provides a good time for me to wind down from the day.

The front seats are heated. I am always cold and that helps so much. You can change the radio stations from the steering wheel. There really is no reason to take your hands off the wheel. Cruise Control is also located there. I have enough space in the car to hold 8 people or dogs. (Assuming the dogs stay on the seat) There is a third back row which is not used very much, but is nice to know it is back there. There is a 6 cd changer in the radio. That is nice because we can store not only music for my daughter, but the music I like as well. I like that it tells you exactly what is wrong on... (more)

That is nice because we can store not only music for my daughter, but the music I like as well. I like that it tells you exactly what is wrong on the dash. It doesn't just say a door is open, it tells you which door is open. The ride is not jittery, very smooth. The breaks seem to work very well. I like that it is so heavy, because it makes it easy to drive in the snow. Living in a southern town, we don't get a lot of snow, but it does wreak havoc when it comes. No one down here knows how to drive in snow, and I feel a little more in control because the car drives in the snow so well. Finally, I like that the dash lighting is green, not red. It feels better on the eyes.
The top negative thing is the cost to put gas in the car. It takes about 20 gallons to fill it up. It only goes about 17 mpg. If you use ac and drive very fast that can easily go down to 15. At least you can put regular unleaded in and don't have to buy the expensive stuff. Another problem I have with the car is the sensors in the tires are very sensitive. Every winter I get notification that my tires have lost air, when in fact, they haven't lost air at all. The air has just gotten smaller because of the cold. The sensors pick that up all the time. I would be putting air in my tires daily... (more)

I would be putting air in my tires daily if it were up to those sensors. It is kind of frustrating. Another problem is that sometimes the radio skips when we are playing cds. It doesn't ruin the cd, just when it is in there for a long time, for some reason it will start to skip. So cds then have to be changed out often. Finally, it drives me crazy because it doesn't have a lot of pick up. When going from a stopped red light to green, everyone passes me. I guess that is because the car is so heavy. If you want to go fast, remember you will use a lot of gas.
1997 Mercury Mountaineer - Reliable, easy to drive
For an SUV I've had for almost 18 years with only 80,000 miles on the clock, this Mercury Mountaineer has held up incredibly well. The interior of the car was state-of-the-art in the late 1990s and still holds up well to this day. The 6 CD changer is great for the long car trips I go on with my family. The driver's seat is incredibly comfortable, and the car handles well both in town and out on the open road. For an older SUV, the car gets decent gas mileage, sometimes topping 25 MPG in nicer weather on the highway. This can be attributed to keeping up on the car's maintenance. The V8 engine has a lot of kick and accelerates well when needed. This car has had very few problems for a vehicle of its age and has only needed new batteries twice and new tires once. In addition, this SUV can also double as a moving van. With the back seat folded down, I was able to fit an entire living room's worth of chairs and side tables inside! The Mountaineer is also a great kid-mover too, going between after school activities, this SUV gets around with ease.
One of my best memories in this vehicle is traveling to conventions in a different parts of the country and not minding the drive because the car is so comfortable, not to mention easy to load and unload when I get to my destination and home.

My favorite things about the Mercury Mountaineer are the 6 CD changer in the center console, the ample storage areas throughout the vehicle, and the ability to move large items in the back of the vehicle with the seats folded down (which has come in handy more times than you'd think.)

The only cons of the vehicle are due to its age. It does not have the latest connectivity to devices, as the devices were not around when the car was designed in the mid 1990s.

2001 Mercury Mountaineer - Well-built and strong
My SUV is sturdy and well-built. I love the way it handles. Ride is a bit rough, but that comes with most in this class. Great vehicle! I will buy another when needed!

I had a tire blow-out on a very busy six-lane Interstate. I just knew I was dying. I hit both retaining walls and only scratched the paint and busted the tail light. I know if I had been in a less-study vehicle, it would have been much worse on the SUV and myself!

The positives are numerous and include: How well the SUV handles on the highway, roominess of the interior, sound system, luggage rack, V-8 engine will tow just about anything with ease, very sturdy build inside and out, leather seats still look almost new with only minor wear and tear, inside and out. Gas mileage is good on the highway, considering age and engine size. Very comfortable seats-like sitting in a recliner at home. My SUV has been through two major hurricanes and one flood. Took it like a pro!
The gas mileage can be a bit harsh with the large V-8 engine and age the age to it, it can get costly driving around town. I have had a several electrical problems with the doors and electric mirrors, but overall I couldn't ask for any better at this age. Ride is a little rough but most SUVs are. Just beginning to use a little oil at 150,000 which is a little worrisome. Biggest con is SUV didn't come with an ashtray!
